Eyes for LiesSM
An expert in deception

The Science
Scientists have identified 50 individuals who are able to spot deception with great accuracy after testing more than 15,000 people. Eyes for Lies is one of the 50 people. More

Eyes kept score on her blog for 7.5 years and had an accuracy rate of 95% after identifying truth and deception in 38/40 people before the truth was known by watching media clips. A record comparable to none. Eyes for Lies is not psychic.

Raw Emotions: Caught in a Tornado
  by Eyes at 1:29 PM

This is a fascinating video sent to me by an anonymous reader (thank you!) showing raw emotions of fear, anger, and disgust.

When you watch this, you can really feel how uncomfortable these guys are...

Wow!  They were lucky to survive last week's tornado, without question.  You can see how close to death they came.

Unbelievable.

My heart is pumping just watching them.

 Travis Alexander's Last Photograph
  by Eyes at 12:33 PM

When I first saw the photo of Travis Alexander above, I felt a strong feeling that he had a sense of what was going on when this photo was taken -- that he knew he was in serious trouble.  I sensed terror and fear and a sense of disbelief, like what they hell am I going to do?  I wondered when she took this photo, if she had a gun or a knife aimed or pointed at him at this point, and we see his initial reaction. Or I wonder if she was acting so deranged at this point, he knew it was a sticky situation.

Today an Eyes for Lies reader, Marian Gilbert, shared with me a photograph that she put into a face mirror software which splits the image of a face in half, and then mirrors it back.  She did both the left and right sides.

What it reveals is absolutely fascinating!  In the photo on the left you see sadness.  And the photo on the right you see an intensity that is gut-wrenching.  It's like a mix of a fear and anger that one would feel if they have their back against the wall and they are cornered. As another Eyes for Lies reader said its a "fight or flight" response.  I can't agree more.

This reader further conjectured, when we split a face in half, are we getting windows into the right and left brain?  You sure do wonder.

Thanks Eyes for Lies readers for sharing your thoughts with me and others!

 Steve Harvey Full of Emotion
  by Eyes at 3:13 PM

This is a great video where Steve Harvey gets surprised on his show.  His reaction in this video is fascinating to watch because at first you don't know what is going on.  You can see Steve is getting overwhelmed but he is tense so you can't help but wonder if this a positive connection or a negative one.

What is the first time you know before Steve says a word if this is a positive or negative experience for him?

Stop reading this if you want to look and come back.

Granted, the stranger in the video says, "Do you still love me baby?" so you get a huge hint there, but Steve's reaction really makes you wonder if he feels the same way, doesn't it?  So at what point does he confirm this is a positive experience for him?

At point thirty-three into the video, Steve turns his head and as he does there is a very slight upturn of the lips (very slight) and then five seconds later (point thirty eight), we see sadness envelope Steve in the eyes. They droop dramatically.  Then a second or two later the tears come and his eyebrows, while very bushy, go oblique.

When his friend says, "I'm waiting for my answer buddy" I'm on the tip of my toes.  What is Steve going to say?  He then lifts his eyebrows, which shows his second positive response, and third, the tone of his voice cues up positively when he says back, "Hey man".

When Steve starts talking about his struggles, you can feel the pain in voice, can't you?

This is a great emotional video, and a beautiful story about how one man helped out another in need and Steve never forgot that.

I have had three absolutely beautiful human beings support me in my efforts to share my abilities with others.  When I thought no one would ever see what I could do or ever believe in me, these three men did and it has been through their constant belief in me, support and encouragement that doors and opportunities have opened for me.  I saw one of them yesterday and the other back in November. One I have yet to meet, but I am looking forward to the day I get too.  These three men believe in me, give me confidence and encourage me when I need a lift and even when I don't. Their spirits have each touched me deeply and I value them tremendously.  They have been so generous and kind to me. I will always be grateful.

My three heros are Steve, Demetri and Daren.  Thank you for being there for me. Thank you for believing in me.  Your support means the world to me, and I will never, ever forget what you three have done for me.  I only hope I can return your generous spirit back to you in other ways...

A Reader Asked: Are they really crying?
  by Eyes at 10:29 AM

A reader on FB asked me this morning if these kids are really crying or is this an act?  The two boys just saw Disney's Odd Life of Timothy Green, and their parents filmed their reaction.

Share your answer below and I'll put mine there in the comment section in the coming days...

Here is a challenge for you. Set out and find "social smiles"--not genuine ones. Post your photo or link in the comment section and tell us why you believe your smile is a social (fake) smile rather than a genuine one!

 Prince Albert and His Bride
  by Eyes at 9:41 AM

If there was ever a strange pair that wed, it would be these two:  Prince Albert of Monaco and his now wife, Charlene. I have watched several videos of them and there is no expression of love, tenderness or a bond between these two. The are ice cold together--chillingly so. It appears this is a marriage is another purpose.  Some speculate it is to produce a legitimate heir.

A reader asked me if these were tears from a happy or sad bride? I would have to vote sad.  She bows her head as if she wants to escape.  She never looks up and gives us a genuine smile of joy. Instead she works to keep a frown off of her face.  Even Prince Albert was surprised at her tears.  I suspect he knew they weren't from joy either.

I find watching these two very painful.  They aren't fooling anyone. It doesn't takes eyes for lies to see this!

Casey Anthony "If Looks Could Kill..."
  by Eyes at 12:58 PM

Here are some interesting photos of Casey Anthony in the courtroom a few days ago (Trial Day 38). She appears to be livid, and full of rage at her attorney, Jose Baez. You can watch the video here. When you see anger to this degree, it is your warning that the person could be very volatile--to take precautions.

At the bottom, I will put a picture of a convicted murderer, John Gardner, who gave this exact same expression in court when his only surviving victim spoke out in court.

"If looks could kill..."

Tension first appears in the lips.
We see anger and disgust combined.

 Personality Identification at Zero Acquaintance
  by Eyes at 12:44 PM

Science has been investigating what they call personality identification at zero acquaintance, and I find the subject fascinating. I believe we all have some ability to look at a person, and by looks alone, are able to identify personality traits of another person.

I have been keeping track of research that I find on this topic because I believe it is a tool I use every day when discerning the honesty of people. I call it facial profiling. While I don't believe a face can reveal a liar, I do believe that expressions of emotions and facial features reveal information about a person. And that information through the process of logical deduction can help us identity people who have a higher propensity to lie.

In this study, researchers found that people were able to identify sexual orientation of people by listening to one monosyllabic word with an accuracy rate of 75%.  Does that surprise you?

I believe we all have the ability to do this, but with all things, we just have varying degrees of talent.

 Casey Anthony's Break Down
  by Eyes at 9:32 AM

Earlier in the week, I asked people if they thought Casey's emotions were genuine or fake in this video.

They were absolutely genuine.

When the video first begins, we see Casey Anthony pressing her lips and then she shakes her head.  She is clearly frustrated.  I would call it a low-grade anger at this point.  She continues to give us indications to support that as she "blows off steam" so-to-speak and looks off into nowhere.  Casey also cocks her jaw off to the side which also is indicative of frustration (it can also be boredom and other things, too...it depends on the circumstances).

At time marker 0:22, Casey's eyelids get heavy and we have our  first indication of sadness (perhaps self-pity).  She then clenches her jaw.  She is working very hard not to break down.  She doesn't want to break down, but at 0:49 she can't help herself.  She gives us a true and genuine expression of sadness.  If you look, you will see oblique eyebrows. Within seconds, however, Casey has composed herself again.

She steeples her hands in front of her face almost in a gesture of prayer to keep herself from reacting.  It's as if you can hear her say to herself silently, "Don't cry. Don't cry".  She again purses her lips, trying to hold back her raw emotions of frustration. Her eyes, I suspect, do well up and she is unable to control it.  I don't see any tears, but she wipes her eyes probably because they feel wet.

Casey listens intently as the man says we are in a time period where we have 24 hour news.   Casey continues to show frustration more than any other emotion.  The wiping of her face could be a self-pacifying gesture as well (though I also believe she is making sure that she doesn't have any mascara under her eyes also).  I notice she is running her tongue along her teeth, too.  That is another indication of self-soothing behavior.

If you want my opinion, in this video, it is taking every ounce of energy that Casey has not to react.  She is frustrated and angry, and she knows it will only hurt her case if she has an outburst, so she is working very hard at keeping her emotions in, and it shows.

 Inside the Situation Room
  by Eyes at 9:18 AM

P050111PS-0210 by The White House
P050111PS-0210, a photo by The White House on Flickr.
Here is a fascinating photo of the Situation Room in the White House as top government officials receive updates about Osama bin Laden in live time.

Their faces reveal a lot of information, and what is so interesting is they are all seeing the same thing, yet are giving us such different reactions. If you don't know who the people are, click on the photo above, and in the caption, their names are broken down in order so you can see who is who.

Joe Biden is just taking information in with not much of a reaction in this split-second photograph.

President Obama is INTENSELY immersed in what he is watching.  I would say if he could talk at this point, he would tell you he has great respect for what he saw.  I think he was taken back by what he was watching or hearing, and perhaps has a healthy apprehension about just how good they were, if you will. I see notable amount of apprehension in his face.

Brigadier General Marshall B. “Brad” Webb gives us nothing as he is looking down.

Denis McDonough is just taking it all in without a lot of expression.

Hilary Clinton is shocked at what she sees, and is clearly having a hard time with what is in front of her.  We often cover up our mouths when we are having a hard time processing what we are seeing and find it shocking.  There are other reasons for this behavior as well.

Secretary of Defense Robert Gates is feeling a pride.  He is getting satisfaction out of watching this.

Admiral Mike Mullen is humbled in this photograph.

Advisor Tom Donilon is watching with confidence about what is going on.

Chief of Staff Bill Daley is intensely watching and absorbing what he is seeing.  I think there is a slight pressing of the lips here. It could have several meanings.

Tony Binken is trying to get a good look and Audrey Tomason doesn't appear to be able to see, though she is listening.

John Brennan has furrowed brows which is suggestive of dislike, concern or distress.

John Brennan is pretty neutral -- just taking it all in.

With all photos, it is a split second in time.  While it does give us information about how people are feeling in this instant, it can and does change every second.   It's just a window, a snapshot, and sometimes people aren't even aware they are feeling these emotions when they express them.

 I Survived
  by Eyes at 11:02 AM

This is a fascinating video of a victim recounting her story of being stabbed and what sounds like being buried. She smiles throughout the recollection.

I watched a victim on Oprah last week recount her story and smile, too. It was noteworthy.

Do you know what it means?

What expressions do you spot in this video?

Predicting a Person's Propensity for Anger by Looking at Faces
  by Eyes at 11:34 AM

Adriano at Anger Managementphoto © 2009 Dario | more info (via: Wylio)
Here is interesting research out of the Brock University in Ontario Canada as written by ScienceDaily.com:
"Psychologists Justin M. Carré, Cheryl M. McCormick, and Catherine J. Mondloch of Brock University conducted an experiment to see if it is possible to predict another person's propensity for aggressive behavior simply by looking at their photograph...The photographs were very revealing: Volunteers' estimates of aggression correlated highly with the actual aggressive behavior of the faces viewed, even if they saw the picture for only 39 milliseconds."
What do you think of this study? Does it open your eyes to thin-slicing?

I believe this is the core of my ability to be able to thin-slice people's personalities from their facial expressions and facial features.

I've been looking into research on this, and what scientists are discovering is that people are able to do this, and do it amazingly accurately on other attributes as well.  Are you surprised?

Here is a link to the research abstract for the science discussed in the Science Daily article.

 Loss of Emotional Control
  by Eyes at 9:55 AM

Eyes for Lies reader, Karon, sent this interesting video to me about a basketball coach at Holy Family University who knocked down a player and called it an "accident".  Lucky for the player, the incident was videotaped. I think most people will see this was not an accident, and the coach is trying to save his skin. He knows his job is at risk and rightfully so.

The guy knocked down, Matt Kravchuk, is upset because he doesn't believe the the coach's apology,  and he is right to not accept it, if you ask me.  I think most people will agree.  Furthermore, he wants the school to take action against the coach as well.

The apology by the coach, John O'Connor, is interesting.  He keeps repeating that what happened was "an accident" and that he didn't "intend" to do what he did.  John has convinced himself of this, though it is clearly not true. He is in absolutely denial he has a problem.  Sure he didn't plan this, but John's problem is that he had an emotional outburst where he momentarily lost control and lashed out and in that moment, he had a choice and he chose to act inappropriately. He wasn't able to stop himself from reacting physically when he was angered. That's scary--especially from someone who should be a role model to our children.

All people make mistakes, but to not own up to what truly happened, I don't think he should be forgiven.  I would be much more likely to accept an apology from someone who said, "Listen, I lost my cool. It was wrong. I'm so sorry. It won't happen again."  Humility goes a long way...

Instead he wants us to believe he making his team better players.  Give me a break!

 Coolest Video HD GoPro
  by Eyes at 11:38 AM

I ran into this video today by accident and found it to be really cool. Not only is the footage cool, but to see these athletes and dare-devils up-close during their high-risk sports and to not see any fear or high stress in their face -- mind-blowing!!

Do click full-screen to watch this high quality little camera at its best!  And don't think it is expensive...these cameras start in the mid-$200 range.  That's nbelievable.  Wishing I was more of an athlete today!  I'd get one of these little cameras. Very cool!

 Urbach–Wiethe disease: Feel No Fear
  by Eyes at 8:50 AM

Portrait of a man

You all imagine living in a world where one can spot lies, but have you ever thought about living in a world without fear?  That's the world that  a 44-year old woman who scientists are studying lives in.  She has a rare condition called Urbach–Wiethe disease in which scientists believe has destroyed her amygdala, the brain structure that is responsible for storing emotional memories.

Researchers have tried to scare this woman without success and even more interesting is that she cannot register the emotion of fear in other people.  She has unfortunately paid for that as she has been held up by knife point, accosted twice and nearly killed in a domestic violence.

While it may sound good for those of us who do feel fear, it definitely has consequences to not feel fear.

You can read more here!

Thanks to the reader who provided this post suggestion.

Sorry topics are light. They will resume to normal in January!  Happy Holidays.

Horrifying 911 Call: Mother Talks of Killing Kids
  by Eyes at 12:00 PM

A mother describes to the 911 operator how she killed her two kids, and how she wants "normal" children instead. She says it matter-of-factly without any emotion whatsoever. It is beyond chilling to hear someone who has no ability to feel normal emotions, talk about something so horrific. Those poor children. I can't even fathom it. I don't want to.

I warn you this call is hard to listen to.

ABC NEWS, Saiqa Akhter, 30

More from ABC News here...

...Autism experts said that while they were saddened by the story, it was not completely unexpected.

"That a family got to that point of stress is unfortunately not uncommon," Marguerite Colston, vice president of constituent relations at the Autism Society, told ABCNews.com.
