Misty Croslin, who was last to see Haleigh Cummings alive, decided to give her story of what happened the night Haleigh disappeared again because she says, "Everyone is against me." She does this interview from prison as she is serving a 25-year sentence for drug trafficking. Misty Croslin was the girlfriend of Haleigh's father, Ronald Cumming.
Misty rehashes the details of what happened the night Haleigh went missing, and what she says this time is a completely different story than what she gave in 2009. In this interview, she says, "I woke up...I don't know why I woke up...and the kitchen light was on...I ran to the bathroom...or I ran to the kitchen to see what was going on. I thought Ronald was home, and he wasn't there, so I ran to my room to get my cell phone to call him. He wouldn't answer his phone over 20 times. I turn around, she's not in her bed."
In 2009, Misty told us she, "woke up because she had to use the bathroom, but I didn't make it to the bathroom. I'd seen the kitchen light on, and I walked in the kitchen and back door is wide open. And I didn't notice Haleigh missing then until I'd seen the back door open and I go in the room and she's gone." (See here).
I do believe that Misty loved those kids, and if something happened under her watch, it would have been an accident or lack of proper oversight (due to her immaturity or drug use). However, having watched Ronald Cummings for the past couple of years, if he was uninvolved, his behavior would have been very different towards Misty. In my opinion, both of these two know what happened and know if the truth comes out, it will only make things worse for each of them so they continue to hold on to what look like stories to me, not the truth.

Sorry for the oversight in the first draft of this post. I heard Misty wrong. Thank you, Sophie, for pointing that out. I apologize.

Ronald Cummings was sentenced today on drug charges. He was given a 15 year sentence and $250,000 in fines. Ronald Cumming's daughter, Haleigh, disappeared in February from the trailer that he lived in with his then live-in girlfriend, Misty Croslin. Misty Croslin has also been arrested on drug charges and could be sentenced to six and 240 years.
I reviewed Ronald and Misty within days of Haleigh going missing in 2009, and I found both of their stories odd and fishy. I believe both know a lot more than they have said about Haleigh. I have written extensively on these two, so click on the labels below to see all of my thoughts.
I will never forget Ronald when he said within days of Haleigh's disappearance, "I'd give my life for my child's life back." To me that is a strong indication he knew at that point she was already dead.
I wonder if we will ever learn what happened to Haleigh.
Thanks, Karon, for following the story and keeping us updated with links! You are a tremendous help with this blog. Thank you, truly!

News surfaced this week that Misty Croslin has told investigators that Joe Overstreet came to her house the night Haleigh disappeared and stuffed a screaming Haleigh in a "black bag" and drove off with her in a van. Misty says while this happened, she and junior hid behind the covers. You can read more here at the Orlando Sentinel.
Misty has come up with so many stories, it's ridiculous. Just reading the story, I see red flags. Why on earth wouldn't Misty and Ronald have stuck to this story from the beginning if this was the truth? What motivation would they have to lie about this, if they are uninvolved? It makes absolutely no sense.
Of course, I haven't watched Misty make this statement, so until I do, I can't draw any conclusions, but this story is highly suspect, if you ask me based on logic alone.
I suspect if this was the truth, we would have heard it a long time ago.

Being able to see the truth, one thing is very hard for me: listening to people speculate at what happened. I think it is because a lot of what people speculate about has no evidentuary support. Human behavior is evidence. People behave the way they do for a reason. We can never discount it, which a lot of people do when they speculate. So when cases start to break, I often steer clear because I go loopy listening to speculation that has no basis in reality. You cannot ignore basic facts.
I heard lots of stories about what might have happened to Haleigh Cummings and most don't even remotely interest me because they are so far off the charts. The idea that Ronald was totally uninvolved is ridiculous, and Pat Brown has offered the first plausible scenario that I have heard of what might have happened to Haleigh. I thought I would share it with you.

A blog writer at the Orlando Sentinel wrote the following on this blog:
“Sources close to the investigation tell me that they have a person in custody,” WOFL’s Kelly Joyce said from Putnam County. “That person told them that they could find Haleigh’s body at the bottom of the St. Johns River here today, and I’m told they found something, but the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office isn’t saying what they found.”
Of course, this is one person talking to another, so take it with a grain of salt, but I thought I'd share it.

Investigators in the Haleigh Cummings case have received a tip from inside the jail, and are searching the area near where Ronald Cummings lived when Haleigh disappeared at this moment. They've also set up a mobile command center, so it looks like they got a big tip.
Channel 4's Tarik Minor said the search of an area less than 5 miles south of where Haleigh disappeared in February 2008 was prompted by a "credible tip." ...
Minor called the search effort "massive," and included deputies from Putnam, Clay and Marion counties, as well as the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office. He said cadaver dogs were also brought to the scene.
In the FirstCoastNews article, they write something I have never seen before: "After extensive interviews with many people involved in Haleigh's life, detectives have said Croslin knows more than she's saying, but is not a suspect. Has anyone seen that before? Is this a new change in status due to information?
I will post more information as it becomes available. If you have breaking news, please email me! Thanks, Karon, for the breaking news tip!

A reader asked me for an opinion on my Feedback page about Misty Croslin. What is fascinating is when I was listening to it, I heard something interesting.
If you go to time marker 7:00 and listen from there, you will hear Misty say, "I didn't have nothing to do with her. I love that little girl more than anything, would never hurt her, if I knew who hurt her, I wouldn't tell."
Did I hear that right? Does she says she wouldn't tell?

Read more What Ronald Cummings says in this jailhouse interview is quite revealing.
Interviewer: Have they asked you about Haleigh yet...What happened?
RC: ...They just told me that their main focus is not on putting me in jail, its about finding Haleigh.
Why would the police say that, if they didn't think Cummings knew something? Does this make any sense? It reveals to us that the police clearly believe Cummings knows more than he is telling us.
If Cummings was being looked at unfairly, you would have expected him to say something like, "Look man, they have the wrong person. The person who took my child is still out there, other children are at risk. I worry about my son!!"
Have you ever noticed he never has worried his son? That's another huge red flag--two in one sentence.
Cummings goes on to say, "The 911 call, I haven't changed my mind about the 911 call since the minute it was made."
What?
What would he change his mind about in the 911 call? The fact that Ronald thinks there is something he could have changed his mind about the 911 call is a concern for me. I wish the reporter would have delved into this more to see what Ronald would have said. I suspect he may have been talking about his threat to kill the abductor (because that is what this segues into, but one can never be sure).
He then babbles on that if he finds out who did it, he'll go after them. It's ridiculous babble, if you want my opinion. He says, "That still remains that it don't matter 40-50 years from now, if I found out whoever done it before they do, you know whatever, might be done whether they took Haleigh because they took because they lost a child, or whatever the case might be, you know, uhm...yeah...."
The word "yeah" here is indicative that Ronald is thinking as he is talking and he is confirming things to himself as if, "Yeah, that's right. That's what I want to say." It's uncommon for people to do this. When people are deceptive, some have a habit of verbal confirming to themselves that they are saying what they wanted to say. It's like there is a cognitive overload, and their thoughts of self-censoring slip out unconsciously. I've seen it multiple times.
In his ramblings, Cummings talks about how someone "stole" his child. Later on, however, he talks about how if Haleigh is found it will be because someone is reporting a "homicide". He says:
"They know I won't be the first ones to know. I wouldn't call'em or nothing else. They would probably be notified by the news media or...or somebody, you know...report'en a homicide, so that's how they'll know I haven't found anything."
Ronald is all over in what he believes. One minute he suggests someone may have stolen his daughter to replace their missing child. The next, he talks someone took his daughter and if she is found ,it will be cause it is a homicide. The two are contradictory. He seems to change his position as the wind blows... Then when the interviewer questions if Cummings is talking about him committing a homicide against the abductor, Cummings owns that, too, but that is clearly not what he was saying.
There is little sense to what Cummings says. When people have genuine feelings, their beliefs are consistent one way or another, or they don't own anything, if they are ambiguous. They don't blow in the wind like Cummings is here. Deceptive people often do this...
Interviewer: ...Do you think she (Misty) know more?
RC: That's a hard question to answer....It's hard to believe that she don't know more, but...It's also hard to believe that if she did know more, she didn't already talk, you know...especially if they got her locked up like they got me locked up...
Notice the pauses? They are suggestive that he is thinking as he speaks (hot spot for deception), rather than talking from his heart.
Cummings behavior towards Croslin is just crazy. If he truly was not involved and didn't know anything, he would be demanding the truth from Croslin. But he never has. Instead, he insanely defends her which makes no sense whatsoever, unless they are both in on this. His reply above is just more senseless ramble, if you want my opinion.
And the idea that Crolin will talk in prison could still happen, but Cummings may have scared her that if she does, she could face the death penalty. That would be enough for Cummings to be confident that Croslin will never talk. Life in prison or the death penalty? I think the choice would be easy for most people: Keep your mouth shut.
Cummings says interestingly, "I want my girlfriend to know I love her." Did Ron get a new girlfriend or is that a message for Misty (that he is still loyal to her so she stays loyal to him)???

Misty was on the Early Show today. Thanks to those of you who let me know. Misty appears to be under the influence of something, doesn't she? She is a very different person from the day before when reporters caught her at the airport. It's like night and day, literally.
The only interesting thing in this video for me was that she said she wasn't afraid she would be arrested. But if she is under the influence of drugs, it may be masking or affecting her feelings. Then again, maybe she is convinced a cover-up is not her problem, if Ronald really did something.
There was nothing striking about either of these interviews to me. Misty is getting used to repeating the same old things, and maybe she even believes these things now. Or, worse, she feels the high stakes are dissipating because no one has even come close to solving this.

There is a radio station, Sky 973, that aired Tim Miller talking about Ronald Cummings this week, and of course, one must take this with a grain of salt, because we aren't hearing Ronald talk personally. We are hearing Miller share what he believes Ronald said. Words change when people recollect what others say, and so can the meaning of things.
Read moreHowever, if Tim Miller's account is true and closely resembles what Ronald said, I don't believe a word Ronald Cummings is saying. It's completely ridiculous.
Tim Miller says, "Ronald Cummings said, 'The bitch had something to do with my daughter's disappearance,' and he said that she never made the bed that night, she'd been awake all night, she never went to sleep. They did not have any laundry detergent, so she never washed clothes. The only clothes in the dryer were dirty clothes, and Ron Cummings, himself, told me he felt as though Misty was having sex with someone in his house and little Haleigh woke up and said, 'I'm telling Daddy.' This came out of Ronald Cummings mouth. The question was asked 'Why did you marry Misty?' He said, 'You keep your friends close, you keep your enemies closer.'"
When I look at this statement and assume it is a true, one thing that absolutely seems plausible is that Ronald would be jealous that Misty might have had sex with some other guy, regardless of whether or not there was any foundation to Ronald's beliefs. Ronald hits me as the type of guy who, if he couldn't reach Misty on the phone ONE time (perhaps after an argument), would accuse her of such nonsense.
I also find it laughable that Ronald tells Tim Miller that "you keep your friends close, but your enemies closer" when he refers to Misty and why he married her. If Ron is keeping Misty close to protect himself, but truly dislikes her and sees her as an enemy, his behavior towards her would be noticeably different. At minimum, he would have a hard time disguising it, but he hasn't given one indication EVER that he is against Misty in any form or fashion. It's is so obviously clear that he is on Misty's side that it is indisputable. Period.
Tim Miller went on to say that Ron told him if he could get $35,000 dollars, he could get Haleigh home.
What is so funny about this last statement, if it is a true account, is how could Ronald say this? If he was uninvolved, and doesn't know anything, how could he make this suggestion?
If only Miller had a real audio tape of Ronald Cummings saying these things, it would be ten times more fascinating. While I have shared with you my opinions, assuming these statements are true and very close to what Ronald could have said, I will personally forget them, because hearsay is not valuable evidence about anything to me. I prefer to depend on watching people for myself, directly, but I know many of you were curious what I thought.

It's obvious why the police are saying Misty is inconsistent publicly now, because when you listen to her latest story with the hypnotist, you can't miss it. You don't need any talent to see the changes in Misty's story. I have not believed Misty nor Ronald from day one. You can read my original thoughts here.
When we live through an event, we usually recall the details similarly every time we talk about it, but Misty's story changes again and again, quite notably.
I woke up some...at three o'clock, I just woke up out of the blue. Three something, I just woke up. I don't know what made me wake up, and I seen the kitchen light that was on and I know my kitchen light was shut off, and it was glaring in my bedroom so I mean all the lights, every things turned off when I went to bed...and the light in the kitchen is glaring so I get up to see what is going on, and the back door was wide open, and there's a cement block holding the screen door open. I didn't know Haleigh was gone yet. I ran back into the bedroom to grab my cell phone, called 911, because the back door was open and I know the back door was shut when I went to sleep, and I freak'n out already, cuz the back door was open, and I didn't know what do, and as soon as I called...I got my phone and uh... and I as soon as I got on the phone and I turned around, she was gone. So I started look in the house, under the beds, closets, everywhere I could think of...just freak'n out. And by the time I opened the front door to go out the front door, Ronald pulled up, and he said call the cops so I immediately called 911 (end time marker 9:38).
Events that Misty marked before as notable are now different. Triggers such as having to go to the bathroom in her first recollections of Haleigh's last night have now changed to a blaring light streaming into her bedroom.
If you listen to her 911 call, and this video here, Misty in February gave a different account, "...I'd seen three--three o'clock in the morning. I got up and...I got up because I had to use the bathroom but I didn't make it to the bathroom. I seen the kitchen light on and I walked in the kitchen and the back door is wide open. I meanI didn't notice about Haleigh then until I seen the back door open and I go into the room and she's gone. And that's all I know."
Why didn't she mention calling 911 before discovering Haleigh missing?
Misty originally told us she called Ronald before calling the police, but this time she strangely forgets that important element. Watch here when Misty says, "Well, at first, I'd seen the back door was open, then I was running around the house looking for her, and I got my phone and I called her dad, and then I called the police."
Worse, the order in which Misty even picks up the phone varies from moment to moment. In the statement above, Misty first tells us she called 911 before realizing Haleigh was even gone, and then later in her ramblings she tells us, "Ronald pulled up and he said call the cops so I immediately called 911."
What is the truth? When did she actually call 911? She can't even get the basics accurate nor keep them consistent. Her story is so jumbled up, we can't even begin to dissect what she says with any confidence.
Do you notice the rate of Misty's speech in this hypnosis video? When people feign fear, they often speak fast. Notice how fast Misty talks at times?
More than that, when Misty talks about finding the door open, we should see a sense of fear on her face, if she is recalling a truthful event, but Misty is as calm and as collected as can be when recalling this memory (she reminds me of Jennifer Campbell on many levels--another having no urgency to find Haleigh. Both have a resignation about them that is palpable). All of Misty's "recollection" memories are missing the normal emotional connections, which is another huge red flag.

Ronald Cummings was on Nancy Grace tonight. Thanks to "C" for letting me know. Nancy Grace and her colleagues seem to feel that Ronald Cummings is in denial that his now wife failed the polygraph.
I was shocked at their response!!
Ronald Cumming looks like a different man tonight. I believe this is because the pressure is mounting on Misty and he is scared to death the cards are all going to come falling down on him.
All of Ronald's responses reaffirmed my original beliefs that Ronald knows a lot more than he is telling us! I do not believe he is just a victim to this crime and I stand by that.
If this video gets posted online, let me know and I will share my thoughts.

Putnam County police came out this week and said again that they believe Misty (nee Croslin) Cummings likely holds the key to case of missing 5-year old Haleigh Cummings. They are also saying that Ronald Cummings and Crystal Sheffield are not suspects. What is interesting about this is were they ever officially called suspects?
Read more (Video)I wonder if people (reporters included) are jumping to the conclusion that Ronald and Crystal are now "cleared," because the police are just reiterating they are not suspects (see Palatka Daily news article). To me, "being cleared" and "not being a suspect" are two very different things.
When I searched Google news for "Ronald Cummings and suspect", nothing comes up. I don't believe he ever was an official suspect. I also don't find any quotes in the media from the police saying the parents were "cleared". I only see they are saying they are "not suspects". That means nothing has changed with regard to their status, if you ask me.
What is interesting is that the police are now saying that they don't believe Haleigh was abducted by a stranger. I believed that from day one. I've always believed both Ronald and Misty hold the key to this case and that they know more than they are both letting on. To read my original thoughts on the case, click here. Unfortunately, to read all of my thoughts on this case, you have to go through the archives as searches are only bringing up the last 12 posts (a limitation of blogger).
Putnam Co., Fla. say that, although Haleigh's mother, Crystal Sheffield, and father, Ronald Cummings, are no longer suspects in their daughter's disappearance, Croslin-Cummings remains a person of interest. Investigators say they also believe Haleigh was abducted by someone she knew. Click here to read more...

It has been interesting to watch public opinion on Annette Sykes sway. Early on more people believed Sykes than did not, but in the last day or so, the pendulum swayed to disbelief (see original post and poll here). What makes deception so difficult is there is no sure clue to deceit.
In the beginning of the interview, Sykes is visibly annoyed that reporters for a variety of reasons. Some of you believe that she is deflecting instead of answering the question, but I disagree. Sykes was annoyed that people had to ask her how she was feeling. To her, it is obvious that a parent or grandparent would be miserable when their child is missing, so asking the question seems ridiculous to her. It annoys her, which is logical. So instead of answering the question, she asks the reporter to think how he would feel. It's logical, normal and nothing unusual.
Read moreI do not see any micro expressions of happiness as some of you thought you saw at time marker 1:25.
I also don't think you can judge someone from a lack of tears. Its much more important to focus on the emotions expressed. Are they genuine? Are they sincere? Are they consistent with the situation? Do they make sense for the situation the person is in? With Sykes, the answer for me was yes for all of those questions. She does break down at one point and it is absolutely genuine. It's not inconsistent at all.
Some of you felt when Sykes closed her eyes and blinked at key times that this was an indication of deception. For me, these are never clues to deception because honest people do them just as frequently as deceptive people do. The most important thing any detective can do is look for inconsistencies. Looking and focusing on behavioral ticks will almost always give you a false reading.
While Sykes is annoyed and perhaps angry at the questions asked of her, there is a calm about her that is undeniable, that I would not expect to see if she was being deceptive. She answers questions effortlessly and without thought. Her words flow. She does not show any indications that she is thinking on her feet.
When Sykes is asked if Misty was gone that night and she replies, "That's a crock!" Sykes has a lot of emotions. She is mad and isn't shy about showing it. Often times liars will attempt to hide their emotions to cover their lies. Sykes is very comfortable letting out her genuine anger here, and if she feels that Misty is being unfairly picked on she should feel anger. This, again, is normal.
With Sykes statement, all we can conclude is that she likely did see Misty and Haleigh at 7:00 PM, but that is all we can gather from it.
To me, Sykes is believable and honest here. I do not see one hot spot or indication that Sykes is being deceptive.
