Read moreMany of you said you were going to watch the McCanns on Oprah this week. I watched it with the saddest of heart, yet an open mind, just in case I have missed something in the past. I have always believed the McCanns were honest, and after watching this interview, I still feel strongly that they are not involved in their daughter's disappearance.
I was fascinated to watch Gerry talk about what I have said as well, "How do you prove a negative?" How do the McCanns prove they are innocent? It's one of the biggest challenges honest people face who are falsely accused.
If we speculate that the McCanns did, in fact, harm and kill their daughter, they would have to lie from the first day she disappeared until today. The cognitive load they would be under would be huge, if they are lying, because every natural thought they had, every word they spoke and every emotion they felt would have to be censored before they expressed themselves. That means they couldn't talk from their heart or gut, because if they did, they risked exposing their lies.
With that, we would likely see one or both of them have guilt for what they did or allowed to happen, which would appear at times when we wouldn't expect to see it. We'd also likely see fear that they might be discovered or expose their lies. More than that, we would expect to see stress as carrying that cognitive load would be exhausting and easy to mess up. Imagine, one mistake and the lie is over, and one or both of them would go to prison for life. Their other children would be abandoned to grow up without parents.
If you imagine the intensity these two people would be under to conceal such a lie, you would quickly realize that doing media interviews, like the McCanns did, after Madeleine disappeared, would be the last thing anyone would want to do. Liars typically don't draw attention to themselves unless they feel arrogant enough that they can dupe the world. The McCanns do not show any arrogance. The type of person who comes to mind with this arrogance is Drew Peterson. Peterson and the McCanns are light-years away from each other.
Logically, it is inconsistent for the whopping majority of the people who are lying to create a worldwide media stir because that would only intensify the pressure on themselves to maintain the lie. If anything, most people would avoid the media and privately seclude themselves if they were lying, but the McCanns did anything but that. They worked tirelessly to get keep Madeleine's name in the media's spotlight worldwide and did many interviews with the media--even after they were called "arguidos", which would be the pinnacle of stress, if you are deceptive, and hiding a secret of this magnitude.
If you watch the McCanns speak in this interview, they speak from their hearts. They speak from their guts. They don't give any indications that they are self-censoring. They don't stammer and struggle for words, hesitate, or say nonsensical things. They don't get their word tense mixed up, they don't show a hint of being afraid or stressed out. They are not and have not been arrogant (confident yes, arrogant no). Their emotions match what they are saying, and their facial expressions down to every single tick are consistent with their words. This is very hard to do when one is lying--especially about something as painful as this.
The McCann's also express genuine hope, at times, which would be inconsistent with a lie. And even more important, they give us supporting stories, which precisely fit the scenario of truth they are telling us, which would be exceptionally rare for liars to do, and even harder to accomplish if they were making up a story of their innocence.

The McCanns, ever hopeful for their daughter's return, released new video of Madeleine, appealing to people around the globe to continue the search for her.
This will be the McCanns second Christmas without her, and they say they don't want to experience a third. They are still clinging to the believe that their sweet little Maddie is still alive.

I do not believe the McCanns killed, hid or disposed of little Maddie's body. I do believe she was abducted, and the person who most raises my eyebrows is Robert Murat.

A reader asked me my opinion on Robert Murat last week, and kindly provided me with some very good video links.
I was always curious about Robert Murat because I never saw him speak, but he spoke publicly in late July. Here is his interview. You can watch him on video, or read the transcript which I also provide (below).
Did you know that Murat has been cleared of his suspect "arguido" status like the Kate and Gerry McCann?
Murat: I would like to know ... ah... why... um... uh... I was made an arguido...ah..because ah, sincerely, I don't understand I... why I was made an arguido. Um...yeah, I would like to find out. I would like to find out.
Reporter: Would there be satisfaction or anger... (inaudible...if you understand this please send me the text).
Murat: Well, I can't really answer that because, ah, they may have, ...they may have had, um............they may have felt, should I say, that...that there was a reason to do it, and if there's a justifiable reason to make me an arguido, um, then... I have to look at it and be sensible about it. Um, it doesn't help in anyway shape or form, me, um, here, 14 months down the line, ah, still an arguido, but that is the law of Portugal. Now this happened in Portugal and as much as we do not like how the legal system works in Portugal, this is their legal system and they are doing their job.
Read moreThis interview is a real hair-raiser for me. The day I saw it, I had to get up and walk away. It really bothered me.
This makes absolute sense if Murat is a victim here, and was unjustly looked at for a crime he didn't commit.
Fast forward five days (in this video), Murat confirms he is still being looked at as an "arguido" though news was already circulating that he would likely be cleared in the near future. With that, Murat tells us he wants to know why he was made an arguido.
Naturally, we should expect the same response in this video as when Murat talked about the libel suit. After all, if the police inaccurately labeled him an arguido, this is what caused the media frenzy, and ultimately what would have caused the destruction of Murat's life, and where his deepest wounds and anger would reside.
With that, we should see a man who is feeling violated, misunderstood and unjustly treated. Is this what we see when we watch Murat speak here?
Absolutely not.
What we see, instead, is a man who is enjoying the spotlight. You'd think in this interview that Murat was sitting down for an afternoon tea, and not a serious conversation about how his life was ruined. He is enjoying speculating and bantering about this whole scenario as if it had no implications for him, yet he readily acknowledges he is still a suspect. Look at how he smirks and grins.
More importantly, we don't see any distress, or feelings of violation. We don't see anger for all the pain he has supposedly had to endure. We don't see a hint that this is a man who was wrongly looked at, put under the microscope, called a suspect and had his life destroyedas he says himself.
I am flabbergasted to say the least. His behavior is a complete contradiction to the circumstances that he wants us to believe here. It is totally different than the script he read out to the media after he won his libel suit, but it shouldn't be.
It's one thing not to be bothered by the entire frenzy and to ignore it because he knows he is innocent, and that the police couldn't possibly have anything on him. It's quite another to tell us it devastated his life and to go after the press, but to then turn around and act like it was no big deal, and entertain that if the Portuguese police had reason to call him a suspect that they are just "doing their job" and that he should be "sensible" about it, is absurd.
It's flat out pompous.
If the police inaccurately labeled you a suspect, would you ever entertain such nonsense?
I can't believe I am even seeing this arrogance. Is that how you would feel if you have been wrongly looked at as a suspect for an entire year? After the police searched your house multiple times? After your life was supposedly ruined, and the media trashed your name around the world?
If shoddy detective work destroyed your life, was inaccurate or faulty, I can be 100% confident in saying that you'd never go there. It defies logic. It's like asking the devil to take a closer look at you and beat you, unjustifiably, just one more time.
What injured man does this? Is Murat really a victim here?
Look at this sentence:
I can't really answer that because, ah, they may have, ...they may have had, um............they may have felt, should I say, that...that there was a reason to do it...
When you watch Murat speak here, he is talking naturally up until he says the words "they may have..." At that point, something stops him. You can clearly see his thought process stop and hesitate, and then he switch gears.
Was Murat actually thinking the police may have had reason or evidence to call him a suspect? Is he curious because he wants to know what they have, knowing they haven't had enough to charge him in 14 months?
If there is one person on this earth who should never have doubts about Murat's innocence, it should be Robert Murat himself.Instead he is playing the "What if game..." with us....begging us to look at him closer.
It gives me the chills, that's for sure.
It's a cockiness at a level that I don't recall seeing before. It's downright arrogant and flippant, like someone who thinks they are smarter than everyone.
Has Murat outsmarted the system? It sure makes you wonder...

News reports are saying the McCanns may be cleared from their status of suspects.
Yes, you read that right.
Furthermore, the Portuguese police are saying that they don't have a shred of evidence against the McCanns.
What do you think about the news?
I'd say it was about time! Let's hope they actually do it, and not just feed the rumor mill. Until I see it, I won't believe it.

Kate and Gerry McCann released a video plea for the return of Maddie yesterday. Have you seen it?
Read more In the beginning of the video, you may notice Kate and Gerry McCann are taking deep breaths. It shows they are nervous. That is indisputable. But the question is what are they nervous about?
Some might say it is because they are lying. I disagree simply because I don't see any other indications of deception. Furthermore, I would have expected to see nerves like this in earlier interviews with the McCanns when they were in the media spotlight on a daily basis and when the heat was the hottest--when they were named suspects, but I did not.
This is the most nervous I have seen the McCanns.
I suspect the McCanns are nervous because they are pleading to the person or persons who have been involved in the abduction of Maddie for her safe return.
If you decided to make a video message, and talk to someone who you truly believe might hold they key to your daughter's safe return, wouldn't it make you exceptionally nervous as well?
I believe it would. It would make your heart pound because you'd know how serious it is. Say or do the wrong thing, and the implications could be horrible. Yet if you do or say nothing, you may forever regret not speaking out.
Imagine the McCanns nerves when making this video.
Watch how the McCanns look at the camera, and how they show genuine emotions when they plea to the person who may have been involved, or is involved in the disappearance of Madeleine. You can feel they are talking to someone beyond the camera. You can feel they have a vision of someone. It is in sharp contrast to the behavior that Drew Peterson expressed when he talked to Stacy a few weeks back during his interview with Matt Lauer.
May 2008 bring Madeleine home to her parents, safe and sound.

I have been asked by one of my readers to review the latest interview of Kate and Gerry McCann given to a Portuguese reporter in the past week and shown here on Sky News in the UK.
When I watch the interview, I do not see anything that alerts me to the fact the McCanns are being deceptive. Do know I watch each and every video with an open mind, and I am willing to change my stance should I see any indications of deception. However, I just don't see any evidence let alone suspicious red flags in the McCann's behavior to support otherwise nor have I from day one.
To the contrary, I see many indications that Kate and Gerry are authentic and genuine. Their emotions, facial expressions and reactions are normal and consistent with what they have been through. If I get some free time, perhaps I will write up the expressions I see that support honesty.
Read moreI also don't see Kate's expressions much differently than in her other interviews. Yes, she shows slightly more emotion, but I wouldn't personally say it was notable.
What surprises me the absolute MOST in this case is how people have not gotten mad at the Portuguese authorities for mucking up this investigation so bad. Why don't we have critical articles and posts written all over the internet about them?
Nor have people gotten mad at the media for reporting every ridiculous, crazy rumor that has come forth. Since when is it the media's job to report every rumor that circulates? That is where I believe the questions and the outrage need to be, but for some strange reason that has never properly developed.
If anything, the behavior the Portuguese police and media should give people pause, and perhaps a renewed interest to reconsider the McCanns as innocent people.
Instead, I see people holding on fast and furious to their emotional belief the McCanns are guilty without looking at anything that has developed around them. That flat amazes me, but I understand why. Emotions are powerful blinders to the truth.

There is a video of the McCanns being interviewed by a reporter on YouTube that is getting attention. People are questioning the interview because Mr. McCann's behavior is different in this video than in other videos, and they are correct.
In the video, Gerry's voice loses strength, he smiles, looks away and he scratches his ear. While none of these are clues to deceit by themselves, combined --and compared to other instances of Gerry talking -- his behavior here is unique -- and that is a red flag.
That is about all that can be said about this video.
Does this video change my original position that I believe the McCanns had nothing to do with the disappearance of their daughter? No, it does not.

Watching the cable network news the other night, I heard an interesting tidbit of information that peaked my curiosity. I guess there are some allegations by another woman of a missing child against the lead investigator of the McCann case.
Did you know another little girl, age 9, disappeared within seven miles of Madeleine only three years ago? Joana Cipriano disappeared on September 12, 2004 and her body has never been found.
Joana's mom and uncle were charged and convicted of the murder on the fact that blood of the little girl was found in the freezer.
Joana's mother filed complaints with our equivalent of the District Attorney's office stating that she was beaten into giving a false confession.
"Portugal’s Ministerio Publico said in June it had charged three police officers with torture, a fourth with omission of evidence and a fifth with falsification of documents." (4)
One of the officers charged, Portuguese CID Chief-Inspector Gonçalo Amara, is now the lead investigator in the McCann case.

Yes, it is official -- Kate McCann is now a suspect in the disappearance of her daughter, and news reports are saying that Gerry McCann will likely be named one as well -- though that has yet to happen.
The reports are suggesting that the Portuguese police believe that the McCanns, more specifically Kate, accidentally killed their daughter and disposed of her body. They say that they have found blood evidence in the car rented by the McCanns 25 days after Maddie disappeared.
I have not seen one thing that has lead me to question the McCanns. To be guilty of killing their daughter intentionally or accidentally, you would expect to see hints of “fear” — fear that they are going to get caught in one of the biggest (self-) hyped lies in history.
Furthermore, they would have to be constantly on their feet to “think and talk” like a victim instead of a perpetrator. I see none of this.
More than that — if you accidentally or intentionally killed your daughter — are you really going to incite a worldwide media frenzy to focus on your every move? It’s ridiculous. Most liars want to avoid their lies — not be forced to talk about them day in and day out with cameras tracking their every move.
I do see many questionable things from the Portuguese police, however; delayed interviews, delayed forensics, and a lack of anything substantial.
The Portuguese police are accusing the McCanns of transporting a dead Maddie in their car — rented 25 days after her disappearance. If this truly happened, don’t you think someone would have seen something? After all, the McCanns every move has been watched since May 3rd.
Furthermore, if the McCanns had a body to hide, would they really create a media whirlwind? It defies logic.
Consider, however, the Portuguese police. They have the pressure of the world mounting on the shoulders. Are they smart enough, savvy enough -- and professional enough to solve a missing person case? Each day that goes by where they are unable to generate credible leads makes them look bad. It makes them look unprofessional and unskilled. It tarnishes their reputation.
Consider as well that the McCanns are in Portugal still four months later. The constant barrage of media reports -- on the missing girl -- around the globe is painful to the economy of this nation. Tourism suffers, the image of Portugal suffers as do business owners. The McCanns presence is only negative to the people of Portugal. People who are economically strained by this impact are also likely to put immense pressure on the police -- and officials to wrap this intense focus up and quickly.
You have to wonder if the mounting pressure on the Portugese police is causing them to jump to conclusions, don't you?
Where do I see the most questions? When I look at the Portuguese police, not the McCanns.

New developments have come out this week on the Madeleine McCann case, and it is drawing a lot of visitors to my post on Madeleine McCann's parents. People are very suspicious of the McCanns.
People have been suspicious of the McCanns from day one and only I know that because I see the searches that land people on my blog. I have seen the following searches nearly every day since the story broke nearly 100 days ago: "McCann parents guilty", "McCann lies", "McCann parents under suspicion".
People have speculated and wondered if perhaps the McCanns accidentally killed Madeleine, or if she died accidentally, and the McCanns tried to cover it up.
Read more News reports are now saying that a specially trained sniffer dog came from Britain and found blood invisible to the naked eye on the wall in the room near where Madeleine was last seen alive. They also say someone appeared to try and wipe up the blood specks. DNA is being run on the specks to determine if, in fact, it is Madeleine's blood.
Local newspapers in the area have also allegedly reported that detectives now believe that Madeleine died in the room and was not abducted.
With that, I wanted to see if I could see the McCanns speak about the newest developments. I wanted to see if their behavior is indicative of lies, one more time -- because if they are covering something up, right now the stakes couldn't be any higher.
If they are lying, the pressure should be at an all time high for the McCanns. With that, I would have the best chance to see deception, if I am going to see it.
I found video of Gerry and Kate McCann talking about the latest developments here.
If the McCanns are found to be involved in the death of their daughter, I will be absolutely dumbfounded.
When I watch the video of Gerry and Kate McCann talk, everything the McCann's do and say is consistent with honesty. I do not see one red flag in this video or the other video I watched and wrote about earlier.
I see two people who are calm, cool and collected. I see two people who are in pain but who are pushing on, holding on to hope. I do not see any signs of anxiety, fear, stress or worry that they are being looked at closely.
I stand confident that the McCanns had nothing to do with their daughter's disappearance even in the face of blood found on the wall in the holiday apartment where Madeleine was last seen alive.

"you [sic] may have heard of a case of a missing child from the UK called madeleine McCann [sic] the parents of this child have not come under suspicion for her dissappearence [sic] from the authority but many many members of the public are perplexed by their actions and statements.
here [sic] is the link to the only formal interview they have given since may 3rd when their child dissappeared [sic] i thought it may intrest [sic] you and i would love to hear your views"
I think the McCanns are perplexing people right now because of their lack of emotions outwardly expressed in this video. I also believe many people are judging the McCanns on their poor judgment call to leave three children unattended, alone in a holiday apartment. Both of these together, perhaps, are generating suspicion.
I believe the McCanns made an awful mistake in leaving their three children unattended, even if they were sleeping, and the McCanns checked on the children every 30 minutes. But they did it. They didn't think through the ramifications of their actions. I think all parents have made poor judgment calls to varying degrees over their life as parents, it's just that few parents get stuck with such devastating results.
For the McCanns to live with a mistake of this proportion is monumental and life changing--if they accept the fact that Maddie may never come home again. It's devastating, but why aren't they acting devastated?
For some, this may raise a red flag. For me, it does not.
What if the McCanns haven't accepted the outcome that Madeleine will not come home? What if they are choosing instead to live in the belief that she will be found--that if they try hard enough, they will be able to bring her home? Believing that Maddie will come back to them would lessen the pain--in every respect. It would take away the focus that their mistake may have cost their precious daughter her life.
Would that account for their behavior? I suspect so. I am sure the pain of that last thought is so overwhelming, it could destroy someone's life. Denial is a powerful coping strategy for survival.
When I watch the McCanns speak, I see genuine emotions supporting the situation, their actions and words. I do not see anything that is out of character for someone who is choosing to focus on only one outcome: the safe return of Maddie. While their emotions are not worn on their sleeves, they are clearly there. There is genuine sadness, feelings of pain, loss and duress, yet there is a stoic optimism that they are clinging to, perhaps to protect themselves from the devastating reality.
When I watch the two parents, they are motivated people. They are doers and goers. They are optimists and believe in the good of people. They were trusting people overall, and they didn't walk around in the world with the belief it was a dangerous place. They weren't people who lived in fear. Instead, they looked at the odds and assumed they'd be just fine--that they would be fine, if they took the basic precautions. I am sure they assumed the likelihood of their children waking up and getting out of their cribs was remote. They just never thought someone might abduct their daughter--a thought they may regret for the rest of their lives.
As a bystander, when we are not directly involved and it is not our child, nor our circumstance or our pain, it is easy for us to look at all of the potentials. But when our heart is entwined in the matter, and the horrific outcome only moves to devastate your life, it's not so easy to look at the worst-case scenario. Many people instead go into denial.
I understand and trust the McCanns are honest, caring people who are paying a horrible consequence for failing to safeguard against every worst outcome of their actions.
