Elisa Baker plead guilty to second degree murder for the death and dismemberment of her step-daughter, Zahra Baker, this week. She faces up to 18 years in prison when she is sentenced.
Little Zahra Baker came with her father from Australia to North Carolina. She had a tragic life. At the age of 10, she had already faced cancer, an amputation and hearing loss, and people reported they saw her being treated horribly by her step-mom.
Police say Elisa's confessions helped them find Zahra. She told police that Zahra was found unresponsive on September 24, 2010, and while I don't she believe was simply unresponsive, I suspect the date has some relevance because Zahra had not been seen for sometime. Investigators put a call out to the media to try to confirm that last time someone saw Zahra, and according to ABC news above, no one saw her after September 25, 2010.
Zahra Baker was reported missing on October 9, 2010, yet her father claims to have seen her on the Thursday before --October 7, 2010--which is no where near September 24, 2010. He says to ABC's George Stephanopoulos, "It would've been...probably Thursday night and I got up early and went to work..."
Probably???
You can read my entire October 11, 2010 review of Adam Baker here.
It appears from the facts we do have in this case, it is highly unlikely that Zahra was alive on October 7, 2010, and the odds are exceedingly high that Adam was being deceptive. What do you think?
It appears Adam will not face any criminal charges related to his daughter as police have no evidence of his or anyone else's involvement.

Adam Baker, Zahra's biological father, did an interview with Australia's 60 Minutes which aired this weekend, but it has been blocked in the U.S. because of the pending case here in the U.S.
I reviewed Adam Baker in October when he talked about his missing daughter because he said he saw his daughter two days prior to reporting her missing, and I didn't believe him. It ends up police now believe Zahra was dead two weeks prior to him reporting her missing, which made his story a lie, as I predicted.
Thanks to everyone who shared links on this story.

Aaron Young, Elisa Baker's ex-husband of 10 years, speaks out about Zahra's death in an exclusive interview with News 14 Carolina. In this interview, Young talks about several things that I am confident he is being honest about. He tells us that Elisa was jealous of the attention that Zahra would get. He also tells us that Adam, Zahra's biological father, was a good guy and that he would do anything for anybody. I believe these are absolutely true.
Last he tells us that he thinks Elisa is capable of doing this horrible act by herself, which I believe Aaron truly believes. From what I see of Adam Baker myself, he was the typical nice guy, though nice guys do get caught up in the spells of psychopaths, unfortunately.
I do not think that Aaron Young was involved in killing Zahra Baker. I believe him here. I was confused when he said in the first video that he has had nothing to do with Elisa since February, but in the third video he said he took Zahra swimming with five other children in August, but I suspect he was with Adam and Zahra and not Elisa, but I would double check that if I could...just to be sure.

Little Zahra Baker's story is the stuff of nightmares. A sweet little girl gets sick with cancer, she loses her leg to the disease and has to wear a prosthetic. Neighbors talk of seeing Zahra abused by her stepmom, and then one day Zahra disappears. Her biological mom is in another country unable to locate her daughter.
News reports surface that the little girl could have been put through a wood chipper. Now drains are being searched for evidence. While the little girl's DNA has been found and her death ruled a homicide, the facts of this case are still not in. We've heard there may be two more suspects in the murder of litle Zahra--one of which was a friend of Zahra's stepmom. The nightmares don't stop and now to hear that there was no family at her visitation, it's just overwhelmingly sad. Where on earth was her father, Adam Baker? You just can't imagine such horrors go on...but the realization is that they do.
Next time you see a child who looks like they need help, think of Zahra. If only someone would have become her advocate and fought her, maybe this wouldn't have happened.

Adam says in a very soft tone, "There is no way I would hurt my daughter." That's a hot spot for me. Why does he say it so softly? Often times when people are dishonest, their voice gets very faint at key times.
When asked if he took part in Zahra's dismemberment, he said, "No, there is no way I could do that to my baby." If you look, he makes an expression of contempt at that point. While he is contemptuous, it doesn't tell us the reason, which is key. Is he mad that he is being questioned, or indignant he has to even answer that? He just continues to speak in a very soft tone, which is notable.
We know from what he told us in the past few weeks that he knew Zahra was dead. And he likely knew what happened to her, or he would have been demanding answers from Elisa by going to the police, which he didn't do. He defended Elisa and went along with her game as long as he could and still doesn't want to reveal what he knows. But I cannot tell from this video if he did anything to harm his daughter, or just covered up the act of an insane woman. I would need to see more to make a final opinion. One hot spot is not enough to form an opinion.
Logic tells me if he covered for Elisa, he was capable of doing more, but I don't have enough clues to go on right now.

News outlets are reporting that court documents filed today in the Zahra Baker case state that Zahra was dismembered and that her step-mom Elisa lead police to three different locations where her remains were found.
Elisa wrote letters from jail in an attempt to clear herself, however, those letters were very inconsistent. She wrote "We really didn't kill her, but what he [Adam Baker] did after the fact is kinda horrifying."
How do you really not kill someone? It's ridiculous rhetoric.
And how can something be "kinda" horrific? It tells you what Elisa really thought. It's gut-wrenching!
Sadly, we know that Adam Baker worked in the landscape business, so we can a pretty good guess at what ultimately happened to poor little Zahra. I can't even repeat what that is. It's unfathomable there are people who can be so disconnected from life and could do that to a poor defenseless little child, let alone their own child. I get sick thinking about it.
May they bring these parents to swift justice!! I think Adam knows more than he told us in his original press interview. It will be interesting to see who is held accountable now.

Zahra Bakers remains have been positively identified according to Fox news. What horrible news, though I think everyone knew what the outcome would be. Let's hope that there is swift justice in this case.
There is a a scheduled press conference this afternoon at 4:00 PM.

My ThoughtsWhen I watch Zahra's bio mom, Emily, I think she is distraught about her daughter's situation. There is no doubt about it. Her lip quivers as she says, "I never got to say goodbye." Her forehead shows genuine stress, though I don't see any tears. Later I do think she is genuinely crying. I see a tear and smudged makeup. She also sniffles.
When the video shows Emily walking through the gardens talking to the reporter, her pain seems to be an afterthought, which is odd. Is she one to live in the moment? We do have to remember that she has been far removed from her daughter for years so she doesn't have the day-to-day memories most mothers have, so her reminders are not as constant for a mother who provides full-time care.
Emily says she doesn't feel that her daughter is alive, and that is a fair statement for her to make considering the news that no one has seen Zahra in a long while, that her prosthetic leg was found without Zahra, etc. so that is not a red flag for me. Emily makes sense that hearing the way Zahra was treated, thinking she is still alive hurts more. That is a compassionate statement.
At 1:25, she gives an incredible macro expression of anger. Its intense. Her lip stays tense as she says with another macro expression of disgust, "I can't explain the anger, the hurt, I don't...he had no right to do any of it, to keep her from me."
My heart goes out to little Zahra. She didn't have a fighting chance from the day she was born.
Thanks, Ava, and all the people who sent me this update.

Little 10-year old Zahra was reported missing by her step mom Elisa Baker on October 9, however, police have been unable to find anyone who has seen little Zahra in the weeks prior to this report.
Zahra Baker's father, Adam Baker, was interviewed by the media shortly after his daughter was reported missing and he gave off many red flags that he isn't being forthright with us. As the details emerge now, everyone is suspicious of the parents.
Police have since recovered a mattress, which they believe to have been Zahra's which was discarded into the trash and police believe contains DNA. And now they have found Zahra's prosthetic leg.

Last night on Nancy Grace, they got into a heated discussion about polygraphs and I was surprised to hear Nancy Grace's opinions on them. She was saying that people should take them.
I can't stress it enough. Polygraphs, as I have witnessed, are not reliable. I would much prefer to be subjected to a Truth Wizard than any polygraph. If I ever end up in a position to be asked to take one, my answer will be no, even if I am innocent as the light of day.

October 20, 2010 Press Conference Catawba County Sheriff Tom Adkins and Caldwell County Sheriff Alan Jones
Investigators in the missing Zahra Baker case are currently searching a landfill for evidence in the case, though they say they do not expect to find Zahra's body there. They said the search may take 5 days. The Sheriff said that "if we can find this evidence, we hope it will provide a good solid time line to assist us in working this case."
Cheryl pointed out a good article that talks about Elisa Baker's history and family. Her grown daughter, Amber Fairchild, came before the court to tell the judge that she believes her mom is a flight risk. Apparently, Elisa Baker, according to Fairchild, has been having an online relationship with a man in England (despite being married to Adam Baker) and has received $10,000 from this man. Fairchild also told the court that her mom talked of leaving North Carolina the day she was arrested.
Fairchild talked of having a difficult childhood. When asked if her mother, Elisa Baker "ever had a stable residence", Fairchild said no.

We get to hear Adam Baker here during his 911 call to police to tell them about his missing daughter, Zahra. It's horrifying listening to it. He has no stress, no urgency in his voice whatsoever when he makes this call. Clearly, he is not worried about Zahra.
It turns my stomach.
Contrary to what the attorney says to Nancy Grace in this interview, his greeting to the dispatcher is very significant. It has huge meaning. People behave in predictable ways given certain circumstances. It's flat out inconsistent to take time out for social graces after an arsonist just lit the backyard on fire and your daughter is missing and in supposed serious danger. It's pure rubbish!!
While I didn't believe Adam Baker when I first reviewed him here, this nails the coffin closed for me. This man needs to be held accountable in his daughter's disappearance. He knows exactly what happened to her.

You can really feel the sadness of the chief as talks about Zahra. It's heart breaking. He works really hard to control his emotions in this video, but he can't stop them from leaking out. My heart goes out to him, too. He is a compassionate man.

The story of Zahra Baker is taking a sad turn and I'm not surprised after watching Zahra's father speak yesterday. Apparently, police were issued a search warrant for Zahra's home and found a ransom note, but ironically it wasn't addressed to the Bakers. It was addressed to Adam Baker's boss, whose house the couple lives in. Upon questioning, police got a confession out of Zahra's step-mom, Elisa Baker, that she wrote the note. It doesn't look good.
Police also had dogs alert on human remains in both parent's vehicle.
The police are asking people to come forward and report the last time they saw Zahra. So far no one has reported seeing her in the last month. If that's the case, as I suspected yesterday, the husband is not being honest in his story that he saw her last Thursday evening. His story is fishy to me.
I wrote about Adam Baker here yesterday. You can read ABC's story update here.

Little 10-year old Zahra Baker went missing from the family home this past Saturday. Zahra has bone cancer and lost a leg and her hearing to the disease. She wears a prosthetic leg and hearing aids. Police issued an Amber Alert in the case and the FBI and U.S. Marshals have been looking for Zahra.
Elisa Baker has been arrested for making threats, writing bad checks, larceny and driving with a revoked driver's license, according to The Associated Press. She is being held on $31,500 bond.
In this interview we see Zahra's father, Adam Baker, speak. He raises my eyebrows.
Adam was asked in the interview if he believed his wife was involved and he replied, "I wouldn't like to think so. It's kind of what I've heard so far. It could be possible."
It's "kind of" what he heard? Why is he waffling, if this is what he believes or is being led to believe?
George asks Adam if the last time he saw his daughter was at 2:30 a.m. Saturday when she was sleeping in her bed. Adam says, "Uh, that's what time her mother told me she went and checked on her--when I was asleep."
George continues, "So when was the last time you saw Zahra?" Watch how Adam has to think to answer that. It's odd. He says, "It would've been...probably Thursday night and I got up early and went to work..."
Probably?
He doesn't know when he saw his daughter last? Usually when people go missing, the first thing we do is go back to the last time we saw them and think about it. Did we tell them we loved them? Did we kiss them?
If Adam and Elisa believed their daughter was abducted, you would think they would retrace all their steps from their last accounts to see if anything was unusual or extraordinary, wouldn't you? And he isn't even confident the last time he saw his daughter? Red flag. I also find it odd how he immediately accounts for his time the next morning. Its like he is trying to cover himself. Why would he care if he knows he had no involvement? It's noteworthy.
I wonder what the fire was that was burning at 5:30 in the morning? That piques my interest.
I am surprised at how Adam responds to George about checking on Zahra after the fire. He seems to think before he answers here, too. He hesitates a lot. He says, ".....um.....no. I was in big panic because there was a fire in the yard and I was talking to investigators." Its plausible, of course, but his response is noteworthy to me--how he thinks about it before answering. Why doesn't he just say "No. I figured she slept through the whole thing. She wasn't in danger so we didn't want to worry her." It's like he never thought about it at all. Did he know she wasn't there at that point?
What were they doing up at 5:30 to even see the fire? Was it a building fire or just the yard? I'd like to know more about the fire.
Adam then leaves the house at 11:00 a.m. or noon on Saturday to check out a job, and yet doesn't think any of not seeing his daughter that morning? Isn't that odd? Most ten year old children are up long before noon.
Then it wasn't until 2:00 PM that the parents reported Zahra missing? That doesn't add up.
Adam says that when he came back from the job that morning, he was working in the yard and that is when Elisa came out of the house and "started screaming that Zahra was missing." That means Adam wants us to believe he came home and never questioned where his daughter was. Either he was really uncaring and unconcerned about his daughter, or we are not getting the real story here.
George questions Adam about what Elisa knew and Adam says, "Uh, she didn't know very much. She came out crying and panicking...just like telling me Zahra was gone....um, I went inside and searched the house and started searching around the block (head shake no) and...called the police."
The words "just like" flag me here. As if she did this, but perhaps really didn't? It's a hedge...Ronald Cummings did this as well.
If notice Adam doesn't give us any details about Elisa said. This is a huge flags me. He should be giving us details. He should have fears, emotional memories, etc, but he doesn't give us any of this. Alarms ringing.
Adam seems to be resigned his daughter is not out there for some reason. I see no hope that they will find her. Maybe he knows things that the police aren't revealing?
I think Adam knows more than he is telling, but what that is, of course, I don't claim to know.
