individuals who are able to spot deception with great accuracy after testing
more than 15,000 people. Eyes for Lies is one of the 50 people.
More
Eyes has a 97.3%
accuracy rate (to date) after identifying truth and deception in 37/38 people

When Tyler Hamilton is asked by Scott Pelley about Lance Armstrong using performance enhancing drugs, we see Tyler give a contempt expression before answering. He says, "He took what we all took. I'd say there is really no difference between Lance Armstrong and the majority of the Peloton, you know. There was EPO, there was testosterone. And I did see a transfusion...a blood transfusion."
Tyler's expression of contempt here makes sense given the scenario. Everyone touted Lance Armstrong as the hero and Tyler knows he wasn't. That breeds contempt.
Scott Pelley asks, "He was using EPO in the Tour De France in 1999?" Tyler thinks and says, "Correct."
Pelley says, "He was using EPO in the Tour de France in the year 2000?" Tyler responds, "He used it before to prepare for the tour."
Then Scott Pelley says, "And what about the tour in 2001?" Tyler responds, "He used it to prepare for the tour. I can't say that he used it during the tour." I believe Tyler when he says this. I think he is clarifying the truth here.
I think Tyler is conflicted to a degree in this interview because as some of you have pointed out, he didn't see Lance Armstrong do the performance enhancing drugs all the time (athletes don't have doping parties), but he knew it was part of the team regimen, he knew it was going on and he knew who was taking it through talking, but he may not have witnessed a lot of it. It makes me wonder if he embellishes some stories to become more believable, out of insecurities.
Tyler does give us a lot of shoulder shrugs and has a habit of shaking his head no a lot when he talks. It makes him a difficult read. If you watch Tyler in the beginning of the interview when he says if he could have deleted his memory, he would have. I believe this is a true statement, and yet, he gives us shoulder shrugs and head shakes. It could be Tyler's insecurities that are shining through here. Who wouldn't be insecure after doing something like this?
Outside of Tyler's statements on 60 Minutes, there are many questionable elements to Lance Armstrong's behavior that support Tyler:
1). Lance Armstrong was affiliated with a doctor, Michele Ferrari, through 2010 after the doctor was convicted of distributing performance enhancing drugs (though I believe that conviction was overturned).
2). Several other top athletes on Armstrong's team support Tyler's story. When more than one person comes out against someone, there is usually truth and merit in the story.
3). Lance Armstrong made donations to the governing body of cyclists, the UCI, which is unethical. He has contributed over $125,000 to the organization and according to 60 Minutes, no other cyclist has done this.
4). Lance Armstrong met with the director of the Swiss lab, where there was a supposed "suspicious" test result that disappeared.
All the evidence combined tells me there is definitely credence in Tyler Hamilton's story.

Science has been investigating what they call personality identification at zero acquaintance, and I find the subject fascinating. I believe we all have some ability to look at a person, and by looks alone, are able to identify personality traits of another person.
I have been keeping track of research that I find on this topic because I believe it is a tool I use every day when discerning the honesty of people. I call it facial profiling. While I don't believe a face can reveal a liar, I do believe that expressions of emotions and facial features reveal information about a person. And that information through the process of logical deduction can help us identity people who have a higher propensity to lie.
In this study, researchers found that people were able to identify sexual orientation of people by listening to one monosyllabic word with an accuracy rate of 75%. Does that surprise you?
I believe we all have the ability to do this, but with all things, we just have varying degrees of talent.

Yesterday the Casey Anthony defense team dropped a bombshell. Not only did they say that Casey did not kill Caylee, but she didn't even find nor dispose of her body. Who did? Her father, George Anthony. But it gets worse. Not only did she have nothing to do with the tragedy, but she now claims that she was a victim of sexual abuse.
We had heard about letters that Casey Anthony wrote from jail, but few people gave them any credence at the time because so much of what Casey Anthony said was lies. Do you remember those letters? In a letter to another inmate, Casey wrote after accusing her brother of inappropriate behavior, "I think my Dad used to do the same thing to me, but when I was much younger. I can see him in my room exactly the way it was when I was in elementary school and everything gets fuzzy.”
The words "I think" are important here. Casey doesn't seem to have any clear memories, which I would expect if she is claiming in court that she was abused by her father. This is a red flag for me.
According to this MSNBC article (link above), Casey allegedly told the police she had intercourse with Lee for three years until she was 15. If her dad abused her, too, why wouldn't she have said that then? Why would she throw Lee under the bus and not her dad?
In my eyes, Casey is not able to speak the truth and is willing to lie at the drop of the hat, so we have no reason to put any credence in this claim unless we see or hear something that truly gives this claim validity. In watching George, I don't see any clues that he is lying, but I would like to see him or Casey talk more about this before I draw any final conclusions.

48 Hours profiled the story of Dr. Mark Wrangler and his wife, Kathy last Friday. Kathy ended up dying in the family home of carbon monoxide poisoning. Dr. Wrangler was an anesthesiologist, and was eventually convicted of killing his wife by directing the flow of carbon monoxide to the upstairs where Kathy slept. I have no doubts the jury got it correct.
I thought you might enjoy listening to his 911 call. It's loaded with hotspots! Which ones do you see? There are many of them...

George Anthony took the stand today in the trail of Casey Anthony. The defense claims that Caylee died as a result of an accident, and that George is the one who found Caylee dead in the family pool and disposed of Caylee's body--not Casey.
When I watch George respond to this claim, I see intense anger. George is using every ounce of willpower he has not to haul off and deck someone or something, and I certainly can't blame him. It makes absolute sense for an honest man. Anger is the most predominant emotion displayed by George in this video second to sadness. Not only that, but the anger and sadness we see are very authentic.
I find the claims made by the defense to be absolutely ridiculous. Furthermore, I have read that Jose Baez claims that George Anthony molested his daughter, Casey. If you find video footage of George answering that claim, let me know and I will look at it.
In this clip, George is asked, "Were you present in your home when Caylee Anthony died?"
If you watch George, he shakes his head no, which is natural and consistent with what he says. The tension in his face is a result of the anger and outrage that he is feeling. It's palpable. He feels like punching a wall, if you ask me, and this makes sense. George shows sadness and flashes of anger when he says, "No, because if I had known something happened to Caylee, we wouldn't be here today." He is so authentic, his response and behavior is 10 out of 10 authentic. I believe George Anthony 100%, and I have from day one.
After this, Casey shakes her head in disbelief, which is interesting to me. Either she is acting or she has convinced herself of her lies, which is possible after all of this time. I don't know which it is. Many pathological liars are often successful because in time they do believe their lies.
George is asked, "Did you dispose of the body?" When George replies, "No I did not" he shows anger again, but this time, he grits his teeth to fight off tears. He is on the verge of tears starting at 1:12-1:13.
When George is asked if he had any prior knowledge that Caylee Anthony died June 16, 2008 prior to recent revelations, he displays intense anger again. He pulls his lips in, and he extends his lower jaw. He is so upset and mad that he controls his speech to say what he needs to say. My heart goes out to him. This man has lived through hell and back at his daughter's expense.

Head shakes are not as black and white as some understand them to be. Just because someone says something positive, but shakes their head "no" doesn't mean it is inconsistent. There are many exceptions to head shakes to apply this rule across the board. As with all things in deception, you must understand the nuances of communication first and foremost.
In this video, you will see George say to David Wright, "It sure puts a new spin on their split" to which David answers "Absolutely" as he shakes his head no. If you applied the head shake concept to this and believed David was insincere, you'd be mistaken.

In this interview, it is interesting to listen to the slip-up made by Jesse James.
Piers Morgan: What do you think when you hear that back?
Jesse James: Ah, it just kind of takes me back to that day. It was sad. It's tough...it's tough to tell someone something...someone that you love, it tough to tell them something when you know when you tell them that you are never going to see them again.
Morgan: And you knew that then?
James: Yeah, I'm... I was pretty sure.
HOTSPOT EXPLAINED
"I'm..." as in "I am...pretty sure." Why would he be thinking in present tense? This doesn't make sense. He slipped here. I bet most people won't hear it when he says it.
I went out and read about Sandra's reaction to his book, and interestingly a source close to Sandra is telling the media, "He didn’t warn her about the book at all — she had no idea he was even considering it until after he’d signed the contract,” She’s devastated. Sandra’s told Jesse they can no longer be friends — even for the kids’ sake. She decided she has to herself first. She couldn’t deal with him anymore.”
Interesting, huh?
I personally wouldn't trust Jesse James farther than I could see him.

I absolutely love watching 60 Minutes, though I haven't been able to watch it lately. They do great work. I love how they uncover and investigate stories like this. This is great to watch. Watch Greg Mortenson talk.
Sadly, however, I've seen so much fraud in charities that I don't trust them anymore. Anyone can hang out a shingle and say it is for a good cause when its not. And even well known and supposed "trusted" charities have been embroiled in controversy, too. There are no safe guards, unfortunately, for the generous of heart. Something needs to change!
I certainly believe the people who spoke out against Mortenson, without a doubt.

Tiffany Hartley defies all that we know about emotional understanding as she recalls painful, scary and stressful events the day she saw her husband get killed, yet she is eerily missing any emotional recall.
When people are truly sad, we know they produce oblique eyebrows. In simple terms, it means your eyebrows knit together into an "A" shape above your nose. In fear, our eyes widen and our mouth pulls back. Even months and years after a tragedy, most people will show flickers of true and genuine emotional recall when talking about an emotional experience.
Yet when we look at Tiffany, she is eerily missing genuine indicators of sadness and she doesn't express any fear. Tiffany has not displayed them when talking about her husband since his death (in the interviews I have seen). It's a notable red flag. Tiffany shows very few true indicators that she was shocked, stressed, saddened or afraid by what happened. When we watch her family members, however, the indicators are overly abundant, as we would expect.
People could argue in defense of Tiffany that she is emotionally in shock, but shocked people do not talk so freely about the horrifying details of the event like Tiffany does, because shock means they cannot accept what happened. Clearly Tiffany can talk about everything, including the bullet hole to her husband's head that she found, up close and personally.
When people feel genuine emotions, science has identified that we all react the same. We all use the same muscles and those muscles often cannot be voluntarily contracted for most people. Even more interesting is that when we fake emotions, we don't realize we are giving away tell-tale signs that we aren't really feeling what we say we are feeling.
This is a fascinating interview because Tiffany is a classic example of this. She can recall seeing her husband being shot and killed, and she even recalls having a gun pointed at her and her life threatened, but she has no emotional reaction. No sadness, no fear, no stress, no anger...nothing. Biologically, it doesn't make sense unless Tiffany feels something she isn't telling us.
TIFFANY'S SLIP OF THE TONGUE
Furthermore, in this interview, Tiffany Hartley self-censors herself and what she says is fascinating. It's a subconscious slip, a leak, if you ask me. She says, "I think it just hasn't hit me. It just seems like how on earth......did we d-- this happen? It just doesn't seem real. It seems like it hasn't connected...in my brain."
Did it not appear that she censored herself from saying, "How on earth did we dothis?"
Do this? What did Tiffany and David do? Did they pull something off? Why would she be leaking this?
I personally (in my own opinion) do not believe Tiffany Hartley has told us the truth about what she knows happened that day. I have said that from day one and I still will say that I have yet to see one interview with Tiffany that isn't littered with hotspot after hotspot after hotspot.

Oops. CBS Video put up the wrong link to the TV show. Click here instead.
Many people questioned Sherry Henry in this video, and I don't think it takes any special abilities to spot that her behavior is off. Sherry doesn't display normal emotions or concern for her missing lover. She doesn't answer questions, which if she was honest, she would have no reason not to. There are several other clues. What do you see?

Earlier in the week, I asked people if they thought Casey's emotions were genuine or fake in this video.
They were absolutely genuine.
When the video first begins, we see Casey Anthony pressing her lips and then she shakes her head. She is clearly frustrated. I would call it a low-grade anger at this point. She continues to give us indications to support that as she "blows off steam" so-to-speak and looks off into nowhere. Casey also cocks her jaw off to the side which also is indicative of frustration (it can also be boredom and other things, too...it depends on the circumstances).
At time marker 0:22, Casey's eyelids get heavy and we have our first indication of sadness (perhaps self-pity). She then clenches her jaw. She is working very hard not to break down. She doesn't want to break down, but at 0:49 she can't help herself. She gives us a true and genuine expression of sadness. If you look, you will see oblique eyebrows. Within seconds, however, Casey has composed herself again.
She steeples her hands in front of her face almost in a gesture of prayer to keep herself from reacting. It's as if you can hear her say to herself silently, "Don't cry. Don't cry". She again purses her lips, trying to hold back her raw emotions of frustration. Her eyes, I suspect, do well up and she is unable to control it. I don't see any tears, but she wipes her eyes probably because they feel wet.
Casey listens intently as the man says we are in a time period where we have 24 hour news. Casey continues to show frustration more than any other emotion. The wiping of her face could be a self-pacifying gesture as well (though I also believe she is making sure that she doesn't have any mascara under her eyes also). I notice she is running her tongue along her teeth, too. That is another indication of self-soothing behavior.
If you want my opinion, in this video, it is taking every ounce of energy that Casey has not to react. She is frustrated and angry, and she knows it will only hurt her case if she has an outburst, so she is working very hard at keeping her emotions in, and it shows.

Brad Cooper was found guilty today of first degree murder after an 8-week long trial. His wife Nancy Cooper disappeared in the middle of their divorce, though they were still living together. Her body was found strangled and in a drainage ditch two days after it was reported that she went jogging and never came home.
Originally, Brad didn't speak out in the media except to thank people for their efforts to search for wife, but as soon as I saw small snippets from his deposition, it became clear to me that Brad wasn't being honest. You can read my original thoughts here.
The judge sentenced Cooper today to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Justice, if you ask me, has been served!

Misty Croslin, who was last to see Haleigh Cummings alive, decided to give her story of what happened the night Haleigh disappeared again because she says, "Everyone is against me." She does this interview from prison as she is serving a 25-year sentence for drug trafficking. Misty Croslin was the girlfriend of Haleigh's father, Ronald Cumming.
Misty rehashes the details of what happened the night Haleigh went missing, and what she says this time is a completely different story than what she gave in 2009. In this interview, she says, "I woke up...I don't know why I woke up...and the kitchen light was on...I ran to the bathroom...or I ran to the kitchen to see what was going on. I thought Ronald was home, and he wasn't there, so I ran to my room to get my cell phone to call him. He wouldn't answer his phone over 20 times. I turn around, she's not in her bed."
In 2009, Misty told us she, "woke up because she had to use the bathroom, but I didn't make it to the bathroom. I'd seen the kitchen light on, and I walked in the kitchen and back door is wide open. And I didn't notice Haleigh missing then until I'd seen the back door open and I go in the room and she's gone." (See here).
I do believe that Misty loved those kids, and if something happened under her watch, it would have been an accident or lack of proper oversight (due to her immaturity or drug use). However, having watched Ronald Cummings for the past couple of years, if he was uninvolved, his behavior would have been very different towards Misty. In my opinion, both of these two know what happened and know if the truth comes out, it will only make things worse for each of them so they continue to hold on to what look like stories to me, not the truth.

Sorry for the oversight in the first draft of this post. I heard Misty wrong. Thank you, Sophie, for pointing that out. I apologize.

Here is a fascinating photo of the Situation Room in the White House as top government officials receive updates about Osama bin Laden in live time.
Their faces reveal a lot of information, and what is so interesting is they are all seeing the same thing, yet are giving us such different reactions. If you don't know who the people are, click on the photo above, and in the caption, their names are broken down in order so you can see who is who.
Joe Biden is just taking information in with not much of a reaction in this split-second photograph.
President Obama is INTENSELY immersed in what he is watching. I would say if he could talk at this point, he would tell you he has great respect for what he saw. I think he was taken back by what he was watching or hearing, and perhaps has a healthy apprehension about just how good they were, if you will. I see notable amount of apprehension in his face.
Brigadier General Marshall B. “Brad” Webb gives us nothing as he is looking down.
Denis McDonough is just taking it all in without a lot of expression.
Hilary Clinton is shocked at what she sees, and is clearly having a hard time with what is in front of her. We often cover up our mouths when we are having a hard time processing what we are seeing and find it shocking. There are other reasons for this behavior as well.
Secretary of Defense Robert Gates is feeling a pride. He is getting satisfaction out of watching this.
Admiral Mike Mullen is humbled in this photograph.
Advisor Tom Donilon is watching with confidence about what is going on.
Chief of Staff Bill Daley is intensely watching and absorbing what he is seeing. I think there is a slight pressing of the lips here. It could have several meanings.
Tony Binken is trying to get a good look and Audrey Tomason doesn't appear to be able to see, though she is listening.
John Brennan has furrowed brows which is suggestive of dislike, concern or distress.
John Brennan is pretty neutral -- just taking it all in.
With all photos, it is a split second in time. While it does give us information about how people are feeling in this instant, it can and does change every second. It's just a window, a snapshot, and sometimes people aren't even aware they are feeling these emotions when they express them.

Many of you have asked my opinion on the royal couple. Compared to Prince William's mom, Princess Diana, I think this couple stands a real chance at success in their relationship. When young Princess Diana wed her more mature prince, Charles, 30 years ago, the relationship was unbalanced on many levels. Diane was unsure of herself, and didn't know who she was. Charles was in his element. It took Diana years to find her footing and place in the world, and when she did, she realized they were very different people with opposite values in life.
With Kate and Will, we have maturity in the both of them and a solid sense of self in each. They are both well grounded and seem to know what they want, which is important for success in anything we seek to do. I suspect with that, they have a good idea that they share similar interests.
When I look at Kate, she gives us lots of genuine smiles.
William on the other hand does not. His face strains in almost a painful way when he puts on the "media grin" as I call it, but it is logical, considering he is expected to smile every time he is in public, and has had to do so for his entire life. When I look at the media images of Prince William, it is a common face, so I do not use it to judge his emotions towards Kate. It seems to be his baseline behavior when in the media. It is much less common for the media to capture true emotions out of William in their photographs.
Talking of smiles, I was actually quite surprised at the photo released to the media by the royal family before their wedding. The grin on Prince William was painful. I would call it a torturous smile -- so forced it almost hurts him to do it. They need a facial expression expert to help them before they release official photos!
To judge William, I would need to see him one-on-one with Kate to have more of an honest critique of his true feelings outside of the media glare. Prince William understandably has a distaste for the paparazzi--considering how his mom died.
But from the outside looking in, I'd say this couple has a good start, likely a solid foundation and will stay together for many years.

I wrote last week about Gary Walters, who was pleading for his wife's return after she went missing because I felt it was refreshing to see an honest plea by a husband looking for his missing wife as so many have tragic and dishonest ends.
Sadly, Janet Walter's van was found in a Meijer's grocery story parking lot this past Saturday afternoon insider her van which sat unidentified in the lot for at least 10 days. News reports give differing accounts. One says a shopper found her. Another one says an employee of Meijer's note the van due to an odor and flies, and when they looked inside, on the third row seats, was Janet's body.
Police believe Janet Walters committed suicide, though they are waiting for official word from the coroner and toxicology reports. You can read more at the IndyStar.com.
