Gary Walters' Wife Janet is Missing
  by Eyes at 2:05 PM

Janet Walters went missing on April 14 and hasn't been since.  Her husband, Gary, has offered up $10,000 of his own money with hopes it might help someone find her.

He speaks in an interview on 6 News in Indiana.  Gary is so refreshing because I believe that he is being honest and is a good example of honesty.  His words flow, his emotions match what he is saying and they are consistent.  He speaks positively of his wife.  However, the story he tells is painful.  I am worried that his wife either met with foul play after she left the house or chose to check out without telling anyone.

Two days before Walters disappeared, she got a devastating diagnosis, and did talk about taking her own life.  She left home in a 2004 green Toyota Sienna with Indiana license plate #GZ7587 and VA parking stickers in the front and back windows.

What a painful story for this family. My heart goes out to them.

Dalia Dippolita on Trial: Off the Chart Defense!
  by Eyes at 11:02 AM

Do you remember the case of Dalia Dippolita from 2009?  The newly wed who met her husband when she was working as an escort and then six months after they were married tried to hire a hit man to kill him?

Well she is on trial now and her defense--get ready--will blow you away!  The defense says it was a stunt by Mike Dippolita with the hope that he would catch the attention of someone in reality tv.  Dalia was just waiting for Mike to say it was all a hoax, but he never did!

I will be surprised if anyone buys this, though Dalia's attorney does a good job at saying this convincingly.

Here is a clip of Steve Kardian talking about the story on TV after this happened. You will see excellent footage of the case and hear interesting commentary.

Dalia does that lovely high-pitched whine I talk about in my training that fake criers often do (think William Walsh).

Reality can't compare to fiction.

 Mattress Failure Replacement Raises Eyebrows
  by Eyes at 2:00 PM

found floral by Duchamp
found floral, a photo by Duchamp on Flickr.
Our lovely mattress from four years ago by Simmons is failing. The side support wire is bowing out more than 2 inches and hence gives us no support. It just bows out sideways when we lay on it. I read the warranty and thought it wasn't covered, but being frustrated, I finally called the store where we bought it. They sent out a service rep at no charge to inspect the mattress and after he left, a few days later, I got an email stating our mattress was determined to be defective and that Simmons agreed to replace it. Needless to say I was happy, but the customer service since then has driven me a bit crazy.

I called the store to order the replacement and I was informed that they would like me to try out the new replacement at the store. I agree. I went to the store, met a salesman and he pulled up my account. It clearly showed a credit for the full amount of my purchase. He first told me I could apply that to anything I wanted. I asked him to clarify that as it was not what I understood. He found out he was wrong. I could only apply it to other Simmons products. That's fine, so I agreed to the replacement they recommended and wanted to set up delivery. The salesman told me he couldn't do that to call the customer service number online.

So yesterday I went online to order it. I was told online that a customer service rep would call me once I tried to place the order. A woman called. She told me that they weren't replacing my box spring, only the failed mattress, which is now a different model. That piqued my interest because the credit amount I saw at the store was for a full replacement of both the mattress and the box spring. I immediately called Simmons directly and they verified that they will only replace the mattress. Interesting how if I buy a new mattress, my warranty is void if I don't buy the matching box spring, but if they replace it, it doesn't matter.

Now today customer service called and told me that once I pay for delivery online, they will go ahead and ORDER the mattress from Simmons. I questioned the customer service rep, "But it says you have these in stock online." He confirmed they did, but that since I was getting a replacement, it would come directly from Simmons for me.

That doesn't give me a lot of confidence. I even told the guy why on earth would I need a special mattress for my replacement? Are they giving me something substandard or what? It makes no sense why they would do this as shipping a single mattress is more expensive, and companies don't do things that aren't to their benefit. I am not confident I am going to get an honest replacement at this point.

I would like an answer as to why they do this.

I called Simmons and the rep told me that they do this for inventory management only. They said the store pays for the other mattresses it receives and this helps keep the two separate, because this mattress will be sent at no charge. That sounds ridiculous to me. Frankly, if the store where I bought this gave me one of theirs, they could then take the replacement and put it back into their inventory and it wouldn't be any different.

All I can say is this doesn't do much for customer confidence in an already poor product. I'm concerned about what I will be getting...to say the least.

 Expression of the Day
  by Eyes at 11:34 AM

Baby Food, Holli by m!les
Baby Food, Holli, a photo by m!les on Flickr.
When is the last time you made this expression?  I bet you can't remember! I can assure you that you have made and will continue to make this expression. I find it fascinating that our face moves and expresses emotions that we are not aware of?!

* * *

While on the plane the other day, I struck up a conversation with the gentlemen next to me.  I was talking about the New York buses and subways, and when he talked about it, I noticed him making an expression of disgust.  About the third time I saw it, I said to him, "Something about the buses or subway disgusts you.  You keep making a classic expression of disgust."  He laughed and said that every time he is with his mom that she wants to take the bus, and he hates being gridlocked into traffic on a bus.  He finds that disgusting! He prefers the subway.

Next time someone makes a classic expression, ask them why they are feeling that way.  It's illuminating and interesting, and it will help you start to understand people around you better.

 Kiesha Abrahams Parents Arrested
  by Eyes at 2:30 PM

A reader just informed me that Kiesha Abraham's mom Kristi and her step-father Robert Smith have been arrested in connection with the disappearance of their daughter, Kiesha, in the past couple of hours.

Read more about it on ABC Australia.

You can read my original thoughts on Kristi Abraham and Robert Smith back in August of 2010 here when they first made a plea in the media for their daughter's return.

Kenia Monge's Parents: A Study in Honesty
  by Eyes at 11:47 AM

I watched Kenia's parents and while I doubt they have ever been suspected in her disappearance, I just wanted to say that I see no hot spots of any kind. They are a good example of honesty.  When you watch the two speak, they each listen to the other and give us nonverbals that they agree with what the other is saying.  They have tried to convince themselves that they believe someone is holding Kenia hostage, which is a normal and natural coping mechanism.  The mom's sadness expressions are held in check because of that belief.  She won't let herself go to that horrible place.

I also watched Kenia's boyfriend, Laith Essmail, in two videos, and he does not give me any pings either in those two videos. He seems honest and resigned that something is wrong. Considering what has been released in the news about Travis Forbes, it is not unreasonable for Laith to think the worst.

The main suspect in my eyes is clearly Travis Forbes. See my analysis of him here.

 Expression of the Day
  by Eyes at 10:33 AM

Frightened Matt by M-n-M
Frightened Matt, a photo by M-n-M on Flickr.
I flew to NYC the other day to deliver training and had a hair-raiser of a flight. A person six seats away from me (across the aisle on the other side of the plane) had a drink ricochet off the overhead bins above her and land on me. The position of the plane at that point was not level by any means and we all felt it. At that moment I was wishing there was a webcam on board because what it would have captured on 200 faces would have been a classic expression expressed by all people on board at the exact same minute. Do you know what expression it is LOL?!

People were praying! And to the man who sat next to me on the flight and allowed me to squeeze your hand to death, thank you, truly!!! You made me feel grounded.

Incriminating Evidence in Brad Cooper Trial
  by Eyes at 12:55 PM

Digital Life on Today (NBC Today Show) reported the following with regard to the Brad Cooper trial late last week:
While investigating the murder of Nancy Cooper, who never came back from a routine evening jog in 2008, police in North Carolina working with the FBI's Cyber Task Force found damning evidence on her husband Brad's ThinkPad laptop: Google Maps in his browsing history with locations that aligned with where his wife's body was found.
That doesn't bode well for Brad, if you ask me.

Read my original thoughts on Brad Cooper here back in October of 2008. Ironically, back then, I was pinged by the fact that Brad couldn't remember his route the second time he supposedly went to the grocery store that morning...and when questioned why he took a different path, he didn't answer.

Travis Forbes Last Seen with Missing Teen
  by Eyes at 10:35 AM

A reader on FB pointed me to this video of Travis Forbes (thanks, DN).  He was last seen with Kenia Monge, 19, after he claims that he picked her up on the side of the road at 2:30 a.m. because she was crying and drunk.  His story is absolutely fishy when you listen to him tell it. It makes no sense whatsoever. If he was a good samaritan who wanted to help a young, vulnerable girl, he wouldn't drop her off to smoke with some dude and then just leave.  That makes no sense. It's a complete contradiction.

Travis gives us some incredible hot spots that are almost hard to watch, because what they reveal, is painful.

When we first hear Travis, we can't see him, but we hear him say with a snicker, "I just want this girl to be found."  He continues, "I want her to be found because I hope she is okay ...safe."

Travis says as he notably shrugs his shoulders, "When I was dropping Eddie off is when we, ah, met the missing girl...er...um... what's her name..Kenia, yeah."  Notice the change in the direction of his statement.  He changes course notably.  Was he going to say something he shouldn't?

He continues, "There was this guy, he was smoking, she asked him for his cigarettes. They sat down, smoked his cigarettes, and, um...all of the sudden I was no longer important. I...I mean I was just one stranger, and then off with another stranger."  When he talks, notice all the shoulder shrugging?  Worse, he is fighting hard to keep a smile off his face.  Why on earth would he feel like smiling?  Sadly, this is not the worst of his clues.

Do you notice how his story lacks details, like we were driving and she said she wanted to stop for cigarettes, but she didn't have money, or something to that effect. All of his details are missing!

Watch when the reporter says, "Did you kidnap her?"  He says no.  The reporter continues, "Did you sexually assault her?"  He says, "I did not."

When the reporter says did you murder her, Travis gives off some indicative body language.  He says, "I did not" without moving his eyes off of her.  His eyes are locked (hot spot).  But worse, his head shake of "no" blends into a mix of a shake and nod, which is highly suggestive of conflict from the subconscious mind to the conscious mind.   And this battle between the minds continues on, if you watch. He repeats the word, "No" then shakes his head no, but then all of the sudden it changes to a head nod (indicative of a yes) (I personally think he is thinking here and that is what we see -- his thoughts), and then he goes back to a no as he thinks that, too, to cover himself. This shows the conflict with him, which in my opinion, doesn't support honesty.  It's actually very revealing.

Travis continues, "No, and you know, having that on you, having that energy on you....is....is very stressful."

The news story cuts again to Travis, "If I had known she was going to go missing, I wouldn't have left.  I've.....Man........  I'm sorry that I've..... that I was indifferent...that I didn't think anything...I didn't think anything...I didn't think she was...was...was... going to disappear.  I could have...I could have walked with them. I could have been more, like  no, you know, I'm going to take you home...and you know, and you know, I...I could have intervened more, you know, and not just said, 'okay' and gone home, you know?"

He is displaying guilt here.  Why would he be guilty if he was trying to be a good Samaritan?

It's even more chilling when Travis says, "You know, everyone has their own choices, you know, and she chose...to walk off with this guy, and (shoulder shrug, smile), I can't ....I can't blame myself for that."

If you want my opinion, Travis is holding back what he knows to the be the truth, and if we look at what his body language is conveying, it looks very bleak for Kenia, sadly.

 Wazineh Suleiman Found Alive, Hiding
  by Eyes at 12:40 PM

Many people wrote to me and sent me the video of Abed Suleiman asking if I thought he was lying.  While I always find it odd when someone claims their marriage is "perfect", I told each of you who wrote me Abed's interview was not conclusive.  I didn't see any outright hot spots that he was lying outside of saying his marriage was perfect. I needed more.

Apparently, Wazineh Suleiman is in hiding because she is afraid of her husband.  Thank goodness this story has a good ending at this point!  Let's hope she stays safe.

 A Study of Honesty
  by Eyes at 10:56 AM

This is a great video to study honesty.  The father of the girl who was given a pat-down at the airport displays two key characteristics that people often associate with lying:  excessive blinking and hard swallowing.   These are signs of nerves.

When I watch the father, I see someone who is very angry about this pat-down and working hard to contain it. His wife is the calm and cool one--that is why she is speaking.  If you notice the husband is listening intently to her, nodding his head as she says what I suspect they both wanted to communicate.

Jenn Sterger's Mix up with Brett Favre
  by Eyes at 10:30 AM

Jenn Sterger wants to set the record straight that she didn't want any part of Brett Favre. She spoke to Geroge Stephanopoulos on GMA yesterday. While this isn't a high stake scenario, Jenn doesn't do so well in this interview if you ask me.

Sterger was a sideline reporter for the jets when Brett Favre joined the team and they crossed paths.  Jenn says that Favre made unwanted advances to her.  I believe that, however, in this interview when George Stephanopoulos asked Jenn, "Did you send him a text that said, 'If this is you, smile at me.'"

Sterger's response, "No, I don’t really recall all of the texts. I don’t remember what was in them. I’m sorry."

She doesn't expect us to buy that, does she? "Really" (hedge!)?  She can't remember?  Most people would have read those texts many times over after that ordeal and during, as well, if she was trying to figure out who it really was. She would have done so much better had she said, "I have no interest to talk about the details of this nonsense."

I find Sterger angry, and maybe rightfully so, but I also find her arrogant and cocky --which puts me on immediate alert.  She has a very similar demeanor (and look) to Casey Anthony of all people, though I am in no way implying that she has Casey's mental illness.

Here are my initial thoughts on Brett Favre when this broke.

 My Thoughts: Jennifer Mee
  by Eyes at 10:00 AM

Jennifer Mee tells us that when she got all the national attention from having the hiccups, she let it all go to her head, and she "...just started doing what (she) wanted to do."

Jennifer says, "I took the path of the devil, I really did, instead of keeping my faith with the lord. I let the devil overcome me."  When she says this, she is truly sad. She is being completely honest here.

Jennifer says that she thinks of the victim everyday and it eats her alive.  I believe her, but when the reporter asks her if she feels responsible, she says, "I can't tell you the truth because...ah.. I didn't do anything wrong."

She couldn't be more honest,  "I can't tell you the truth because ..."  However, in the second half of that statement, she was improvising, if you want my opinion.  What I believe she really wanted to say was ...because if I own it, I will implicate myself and I cannot accept that.

She smiles at that time because she knows her actions started that ball rolling, but doesn't want to own it because she doesn't feel she pulled the trigger. This is causing her to feel conflicting emotions.  Yes, she feels bad that she did what she did, but she feels that she never intended for murder to be the outcome.  She continues, "I'm not guilty of anything."  Jennifer doesn't want to take responsibility for her actions, sadly.

She first told police a false story,  if you want my opinion, and then she confessed to the truth--though Jennifer wants us to believe the second confession is false in hindsight.  I suspect that is because she got arrested on the truth.  The reporter says to Jennifer, "Why would you implicate yourself in a murder?"

Jennifer says, "From (shakes her head no), I don't know.  It's hard...it's hard to explain."

It's hard to explain, if you want my opinion, because if she says the truth, it will implicate her again, so what can she say? It's hard.  Absolutely.  She is stuck between a rock and a hard place and she knows it unless she wants to fess up and face prison time.  Not a nice place to be for a bad decision.

She continues, "I did, I thought I was quote unquote 'famous' so young nothing would happen to me so I went with a story that I wouldn't get in trouble with, but in all reality it put me behind bars 5 months and I could be facing life."

Jennifer says she "went with a story"...a story is usually not how one refers to the truth.  I think the story was the first version she gave and when they didn't buy it, she confessed to the truth believing that would "free" her, but it backfired instead. Instead, Jennifer found the truth didn't sit well. That's a hard lesson because we are all told as children, the truth will set you free, but as you mature you realize that statement has a very different meaning.

Jennifer expresses sadness when she talks about her grandmother's death.  She displays true oblique eyebrows, but we don't see that any other time prior to this, ironically. Jennifer believes she contributed to her grandmother's death because of her actions.  Jennifer knows she stepped way out of bounds, but like anyone, doesn't want to sit behind bars for the rest of her life.

Jennifer says she doesn't want to think that far ahead about the trial, because she is scared, and I believe her. She cries again, showing true sadness when thinking about her family.

Then she shows true sadness when the reporter reminds her that she will see the victim's family in court and asks Jennifer to say something to the victim's family.  She shows true and genuine sadness when she says, "I just want to say I am sorry for the loss of his cousin and that I wish it would have been different than how it proceeded out to be 'cuz he didn't deserve it. He didn't.  He did not deserve to go.  He did not."  You can feel and see Jennifer is truly sad about the murder.

While Jennifer smiles through parts of the interview, I do not see them as malicious or arrogant smiles.  They are more nervous in nature, and not arrogant in any way.

Jennifer, if you want my opinion knows she made horrible choices, but she keeps clinging to the belief she didn't kill the man.  She didn't pull the trigger.  She doesn't want to accept that she lured this man into a lethal situation and her smiles show her turmoil, her confused emotions. To me, it is akin to her saying, "Yes, I did that, but I didn't intend for this to happen...so I'm not guilty (yet she knows her actions led to murder)."

She also has a hard time reconciling the fact that when she told the truth, she was arrested.  The truth, we all believe should set us free, and when she was honest in my opinion, it did her more harm than good in the eyes of the law. It put her behind bars, and she doesn't feel that is right.

Life can be oh-so-complicated. Jennifer Mee got a taste of stardom and that taste was very destructive for her, sadly.

 Eugene Arteta: Barbara Arteta's Death
  by Eyes at 8:38 AM

I wrote about Eugene Arteta after his wife, Barbara, went missing off an Amtrak train last September.  Her body was found dead beside the tracks half way to their destination after the train pulled into the station ending its journey. Eugene's behavior in an interview after the incident flagged me. You can read my thoughts here.

On March 29, 2011, the Atlanta-Journal Constitution (AJC) wrote an update to the story. The first sentence of the article reads, "The mystery around the death of Barbara Arteta may never be solved."

The AJC further wrote, "District Attorney Jackie Johnson wrote the GBI after reviewing the investigative file that there was not 'sufficient evidence to support the elements of a crime or any identifiable suspects.'”

Barbara Arteta's manner of death is listed as undetermined. You can read the article here.

It looks like we may never know what happened to Barbara, sadly.
