 Tiffany Hartley: Six Months Later
  by Eyes at 11:09 AM

Tiffany Hartley went to the Colorado capital yesterday to put pressure on public officials to bring David's body home. It's been six months since David Hartley was allegedly killed in Mexico while the couple was jet skiing on Falcon Lake, a notoriously dangerous area.

Recalling the past six months, Tiffany strangely says, "It's gone so fast, I can't even believe we're at six months."

As usual, Tiffany reacts completely different than most people.  Most people when they have gone through a tragedy don't feel like time has flown.  It usually stands still as they grieve and cope with their loss, but for Tiffany, oddly, time has flown by.  It makes you wonder if she has been having fun? You know the old saying, "Time flies when you are having fun."  Hard to imagine.

Tiffany has given different accounts of what happened that day in the various interviews she have given and they definitely have my eyebrows raised high. I feel something is off.

I was glad to hear that according to this news report, the FBI says this is currently an ongoing investigation.

Eric Savitz wrote a blog post, The Untapped Power of Smiling, for Forbes online. It was a great read. I thought you would enjoy it. I apologize that posts are scant these days. I haven't uncovered any great stories to be writing about so in the meantime, I thought this was fascinating. I hope you enjoy it and smile!

This is such a fascinating case. I am convinced that Amanda Knox knew things that happened that night which she is not forthcoming about, but what her involvement was, I don't claim to know. I wonder if she will be set free...

48 Hours Sneak Peek: Ryan Ferguson Story Update
  by Eyes at 11:33 AM

I am looking forward to watching this on Saturday night. I have long believed in Ryan Ferguson's innocence.  You can read my original thoughts here written in 2006.  Chuck Erickson, the key witness against Ferguson, gave a deposition last year stating that he believes Ryan Ferguson is innocent now. It was on the Internet, but has since been taken down.

Father of Murder Victim: "I don't trust myself"
  by Eyes at 10:08 AM

John Foreman's son, Jason, then 5, was brutally murdered more than three decades ago by Michael Woodmansee who killed because he said he wanted to see "what it would be like."  Woodmansee was sentenced to 40 years, but is getting released 12 years early for good behavior.  Woodmansee was only 16 when he killed Jason and is scheduled to be released from prison in August.

Foreman talked to Good Morning America yesterday and warns that he doesn't trust himself not to kill Woodmansee once he is released.  He even talked of trying to get into the prison to kill his son's killer.

I absolutely believe Foreman is serious that he is not able to control himself. This is a scary situation.  You feel deeply for Foreman, whose son was ravaged by a deranged man, but does it make it right for him to threaten to kill and potentially kill Woodmansee?  As Dan Abrahms said yesterday on The View, "Assault is assault, and murder is murder."

 Drew Peterson's Story on A&E
  by Eyes at 10:56 AM

Susan Murphy-Milano hosted a segment on A&E on Drew Peterson. She gives us more background details to the stories of Kathleen Savio and Stacy Peterson.

I particularly like how she explains Drew Peterson's personality. She's right on the money. Drew was a charmer. Most people would have gravitated towards him in social situations prior to the news coverage that showed his arrogance side. Drew was, at one time, a very likable guy.

Read one of my earliest posts on Drew Peterson here, shortly after Stacy went missing.

 Dateline "Something About Susan"
  by Eyes at 12:08 PM

Did you see Dateline Friday night?  They aired the story of Susan and Peter Williams.  They were going through a divorce when Susan decided to hire a hitman to kill her husband.  You get to see video of Susan hiring the man to do the job.  It reminds me of Dalia Dippolito.  Susan is cold, callous and without emotions.  She is cocky and arrogant, and it bites her in the butt!

The undercover agent gave Susan several opportunities to extricate herself from the situation (which should have been a big red flag), but she missed it because she was so intent in her quest to eliminate her husband.  Truly worth watching, if you missed it!  You see someone who is very sick, but exists among us in relative normality.  Well, she did anyway.  Now she is locked up.

 The Head Shake
  by Eyes at 11:03 AM

Many people struggle with head shakes and nods and if the person means what they say, especially if they shake their head, but say yes.

Here is an example of Michelle Obama.  She says, "I can say that I enjoyed this year" and yet she shakes her head no.

Does this mean she didn't enjoy this year?

No, it does not.  Her head shake is not in contradiction to what she is saying.  Often times we emphasize what we feel with a head shake. Its normal and natural, and throws a lot of people.

If you want to know if someone's head shake it out of line, for beginners, it should be in opposition to the words "yes" and "no" to correlate or have significant meaning. There are other instances that have significance, but its more complex.

Please refrain from political comments.  This blog is about deception, emotion and understanding human behavior.  The only thing I will say about Michelle is I love how humble she is--considering her position and status.

Thanks, Gregory, for the question.

 Criminals Look Different From Non-Criminals
  by Eyes at 11:23 AM

Arrest 1.photo © 2009 Dani | more info (via: Wylio)
Here is a fascinating article in Psychology Today by Satoshi Kanazawa, an evolutionary psychologist at London School of Economics.

The article talks about how people can identify criminals in a list of photographs from non-criminals.  Does it surprise you?

I am a firm believer that our face communicates information about us, and this study doesn't surprise me in the least. I can look at a face and know immediately if I should have concern. I believe this is one element that helps me be stellar at deception.  Faces give me a wealth of information which I draw upon to determine if someone has a higher propensity to be deceptive, dangerous, etc.

Personality (Facial) Profiling is very powerful and one of the tools that I have drawn on all my life. I thought everyone did this until scientists told me otherwise...

I have profiled the faces of over 100 strangers to date and scored 90% accurate--judged by the people's photos who I profiled.

Brad Cooper Trial to Begin This Week
  by Eyes at 9:33 AM

Brad Cooper claims his wife went out for a morning jog on July 12, 2008 and never returned home.  Sadly, her body was later found in a drainage ditch not far from the couples home. Three months later police arrested Brad Cooper for the murder of his wife. His murder trial is expected to start this week.

The court is having a difficult time filling the jury seats in this hard economic time. They've gone through the entire jury pool  as they believe this case will take at least a month of time and payment will likely only be around $1,000 for the service.

Unfortunately, Brad didn't speak out to the media outside of thanking people for searching for his wife early on in the case, and it wasn't until his deposition was released that I got to see and hear Brad speak. I immediately noticed inconsistencies.

Brad gave us two different stories of what happened that morning. In one version, his wife notices they are out of laundry soap. In the other, he notices. In the deposition, he starts the laundry and does one load. In the affidavit, he says he "could not do laundry". He gives us to distinctly different accounts for each. This is very telling to me. He can't keep basic facts straight?

It's also very notable that Brad talks about getting ready for the girls to "get up" that morning in the affidavit. Yet oddly, in his deposition, he talks about how Katie, his daughter, was up early and fussing because she didn't have milk, and that he went to get her milk, came home and got a bottle of milk to give to Katie. Then he talks about putting her down.

Clearly, Brad has some serious explaining to do!

Read more of my deposition review here.

Thanks, Karon, for the story update.

Michelle Money on The Bachelor & A Spoiler?
  by Eyes at 10:10 AM

Michelle Money was on the Women Tell All on the Bachelor last night. She was confronted by fellow contestants that her behavior was rude and out of line. Michelle told the audience that she just has a sarcastic sense of humor.

I personally don't buy it. Did you?

Last night, Brad said something in the show that was unscripted and very telling if you ask me. He said that he wasn't suppose to flirt or show emotions for the other girls--as that is what his "significant other" said to him before the show.

I thought about Emily Maynard and Chantal O'Brien. Which one would say that? Emily is too demure to request that of Brad, so it suggests the significant other is Chantel, if you ask me.

I further analyzed Brad's behavior and remember that he told us that he doesn't like to be put under pressure. Knowing that, I don't think he'd like to have the added pressure to meet Emily's high standards of her previous love. Will he match up? Will she always compare him? Will he meet her expectations? Brad is not one to like those challenges. He doesn't want to be compared to the other guy.

Furthermore, Emily gives us the impression of a strong moral ethic and that puts Brad off. Not because he is unethical, but because he doesn't want to always wonder if he measures up -- if his actions are acceptable to Emily. I suspect he feels her standards may be too high for him.

While he is wildly attracted to her, that added pressure is too much for him. If you recall on Emily's hometown date, at her house, the night he left, it was too much for him to even kiss Emily with her daughter sleeping upstairs. Why? Because he didn't know if she would find it acceptable or not, and that conflict shut him down.

So based on those elements, I suspect Brad's final rose will go to Chantel...though reality TV can fool you!

 Shelley's Last Breath: 48 Hours
  by Eyes at 12:00 PM

Reprint from May 11 2010

Watch CBS News Videos Online

Last Saturday 48 Hours featured the story of Shelley Tyre and David Swain, a married couple who took a Caribbean vacation. While on a dive, the two separated according to David, and when David surfaced, Shelley did not. Shelley died on that dive. Was it an accident or murder?

Read moreDavid Swain was eventually convicted of murdering his wife, and I have to say that I agreed with the verdict. When 48 Hours interviewed David, it appeared to be after the verdict, which we must remember would subdue or eliminate clues to deception as the high stakes are gone, though in David's situation, I believe clues are still present.

David has absolutely no emotions about the loss of his wife. He doesn't give us reasonable answers to fair questions, which leads me to believe he isn't a victim. When asked how he felt when his in-laws thought he killed their daughter, David said he felt sad. That just doesn't fit with a man who is wrongly accused of a murder he didn't commit-- the murder of his wife! He should be angry, but when questioned if he was, he said her parents didn't understand diving. I'm not buying it.

David quit CPR within "minutes", too, which is not common for professionals and David was an EMT. One witness said that David was "emphatic" his wife was dead, which surprised people, and when helped arrived, David said he didn't want any extraordinary measures taken -- he'd seen dead bodies before. Most people who lose a loved one are the last to give up hope. Why was David so accepting of Shelley's death so quickly?

David denied that he had any affair with Mary Bassler to the point it was absurd, if you ask me. Why would he do that if he was honest? You can see a copy of a letter he wrote to Mary here.

Another thing that tipped me off was the fact that he wants us to believe he is a non-emotional guy--that's why he isn't showing emotions for his wife. But if you watch David when they talk about his brother killing his mother, amazingly, David has emotions! He feels pain at the loss of his mother some 30 years ago, but when it comes to the recent death of his wife there is nothing! Isn't that interesting? Obviously, one death pained him while the other one didn't, sad to say. If he didn't feel emotions, it would be across the board, but its not. I could go on and on...

But by far the most peculiar thing I saw on 48 Hours was what David said himself. At approximately 19:00 minutes into the show, David said, "Everybody keeps thinking that I'm doing all this for money. I'm just as happy being flat broke as I am when I'm fat and rich. Probably happier flat broke. Less hassle."

What?

Did David just make himself culpable? Everybody keeps thinking I am doing all this for the money". If you are a victim, do you feel any culpability whatsoever? If you were innocent, wouldn't you say, "People think I did this for the money." Why is he still "doing all this"?? He is in prison for Pete's sake. I think it is the tense of the words that he used which really set me off.

Why is he still in action?

 I Survived

This is a fascinating video of a victim recounting her story of being stabbed and what sounds like being buried. She smiles throughout the recollection.

I watched a victim on Oprah last week recount her story and smile, too. It was noteworthy.

Do you know what it means?

What expressions do you spot in this video?

 Expression of the Day
  by Eyes at 11:02 AM

Clémence Poesy, People au Défilé Channel, Printemps-Eté 2010photo © 2009 nicolas genin | more info (via: Wylio)

Here is an interesting photo of woman who appears to be in the spotlight.  There are three faces in this photograph that reveal information.

The subject of the photo seems to be the subject of the crowd as well as we see a photographer taking her photo in the background.  The subject projects confidence as well as a subtle positive emotions with perhaps a hint of surprise. I wonder if she recognizes someone in front of her.

We can surmise this is a positive experience for the photo's subject because there are no signs of sadness, distress or anger in her face.  There are no negative emotions expressed. She has symmetrical features as well which is supportive of a person who is outgoing.  Do you remember the outgoing kids from school?  Most of them had symmetrical features, too, which we consider to be more attractive. People who are insecure or shy often express doubt or low level subtle fear in their face. They express their uncomfortableness in the face.

The camera woman also has a subtle expression of happiness, too. You can see a subtle smile.  She looks pleased that she is getting the photograph. The photographer has a humbleness about her, doesn't she?  How do we articulate why that is?

The woman on the far left of the photograph does not look excited to be there. She appears to be tired of the crowds.  Her eyelids are heavy and her head is ever-so-slightly tilted. She almost looks "bored" for a better word. She clearly sees the person who took this photo.   By her reaction, she either doesn't know the subject of this photo, or could careless about her...

What do you see when you look at this photograph?

Predicting a Person's Propensity for Anger by Looking at Faces
  by Eyes at 11:34 AM

Adriano at Anger Managementphoto © 2009 Dario | more info (via: Wylio)
Here is interesting research out of the Brock University in Ontario Canada as written by ScienceDaily.com:
"Psychologists Justin M. Carré, Cheryl M. McCormick, and Catherine J. Mondloch of Brock University conducted an experiment to see if it is possible to predict another person's propensity for aggressive behavior simply by looking at their photograph...The photographs were very revealing: Volunteers' estimates of aggression correlated highly with the actual aggressive behavior of the faces viewed, even if they saw the picture for only 39 milliseconds."
What do you think of this study? Does it open your eyes to thin-slicing?

I believe this is the core of my ability to be able to thin-slice people's personalities from their facial expressions and facial features.

I've been looking into research on this, and what scientists are discovering is that people are able to do this, and do it amazingly accurately on other attributes as well.  Are you surprised?

Here is a link to the research abstract for the science discussed in the Science Daily article.
