Jo Yeates' Murder: A Pillar of Society?
  by Eyes at 7:46 AM

Jo Yeates vanished after coming home from a night out with friends on December 17 in the UK. She was last seen buying a pizza on surveillance on her way home. Sadly her body was found on Christmas Day.

A retired English teacher, Chris Jefferies, 65, has been held for questioning and arrested for her death.  He was Jo's landlord.  A neighbor to Jefferies, Ray Lowman, told BBC news about Jefferies, "He is basically a pillar of society. One of the well-known familiar locals."  The neighbor also called Jefferies very intelligent and smart.

You can see Mr. Jefferies in an interview here with The Sun (UK) talk about the last time he saw Yeates. He is very arrogant and smug.  Arrogance is always a tip-off that something is amiss when someone is questioned about a crime in a criminal manner.  Arrogance has no place nor reason, though alone it is not conclusive.

Several people were suspicious of Jo's parents in this interview, but I did not see anything that raised any red flags. You can read my thoughts here on her parents in their plea for their daughter's return last week.

Thanks for the video link, Sophie!

Did a Serial Killer Kill Jonathan Foster?
  by Eyes at 7:01 PM

Detectives are taken back by the responses of Mona Yvette Nelson, the person they believe killed Jonathan Foster. They say she is a soulless, cold murderer who has no response for her actions.

What a horrible crime.

 Jonathan Foster Update
  by Eyes at 7:54 PM

Thanks, Chatty Cathy!

The woman being held and who will be charged with capital murder is Mona Nelson, she is in her 40s and is an acquaintance of the family. Read more here.

Here is more information, too.

To read my original thoughts on this case, click here. I felt things were fishy with Jonathan's mom when I first saw her speak.  It has now come out in the news that she lied about her son being with a babysitter.

 Jonathan Foster Missing
  by Eyes at 3:42 PM

Jonathan Foster, 12, went missing in Texas on Christmas Eve and hasn't been seen since.  Unfortunately, it doesn't look good.

In this video, Jonathan's mother says her son was at a babysitter's house just a few doors down from where they live, when he came home to get a video game.  She says, "He was supposed to run home, go get it and go back to the babysitters and apparently he never made it."

Read moreYet in this video above, Jonathan's mother says, "I come home, I unlock the door, I'm looking around, Jonathan, Jonathan, no where to be found."
Wasn't he supposed to be at the babysitters house?  Why doesn't she talk about calling the babysitter's house when she came home?   Why would she come home and look for her son if she believed he was supposed to be at the babysitters?  Why isn't she holding the babysitter accountable? Why is no one questioning the babysitter?

In this video, the news reporter says that Jonathan was home playing video games when his step-father stopped in.  Why doesn't the step-father demand answers from the babysitter?  Why didn't he question the son then, if he wasn't supposed to be home alone?

There are many questions in this case...

In this video, Jonathan's mother talks about receiving a mysterious phone call at work shortly before Jonathan went missing, and yet listen to what she says.  She says, "And I said this is Angela, is my son there?  And I heard her, 'Is your momma's name Angela?'" If some stranger calls you, do you say your name and ask for your son?  Of course not.  Angela can't keep her facts straight because she, in my opinion, is not telling us everything she knows.

In another video, the mother says, "He is a curious kid, he is a pest."

A pest? That is not a good sign.

Something is fishy.

Angela Davis, Jonathan's mother, lacks hope that her boy will be found.  She seems notably resigned.  I also didn't see tears in her eyes though I do see genuine sadness (they may not be showing her tears in these clips), Jonathan's step-father is as emotionless as you can get.

Thanks, D, for the story lead.

 Jo Yeates: Murdered?
  by Eyes at 9:27 AM

Joanna Yeates, a landscape architect in the UK, went missing a week before Christmas. Her parents plead for her return in this video, but sadly Jo was found dead Christmas day by some dog walkers.  Upon discovery, there was no sign of injury to Jo. Investigators are working to find out what happened.

Many people were suspicious of Jo's family. While I have only seen the parents speak, I do not find anything suspicious in their behavior. Their sadness is palpable, and while they speak in past tense of their daughter after only six days, it does not raise a red flag to me in any fashion. I have seen other cases where people refer to missing loved ones in past tense.
Thanks for the topic suggestion.  If anyone sees the boyfriend speak, please let me know.

Denise Vernier Missing in Ontario, Canda
  by Eyes at 9:43 AM

Mike Vernier's wife, Denise Vernier, went missing in September in Ontario, Canada.  In this clip above, he asks for the public's assistance.

When I watch Mike speak, I am immediately pinged at his hesitant speech.  He gives a lot of shoulder shrugs when he speaks. He is sharing his last memories of being with his wife with us, and those memories should be crystal clear, yet his body language and recall is full of doubt.  It's an immediate red flag.

Mike says, "It was on a Saturday, the previous day...in the...ah...in the evening....and everything seemed to be okay and...she sh...we just ah...everything was okay...ah...there was no problems or anything and the next day, well ah, she said she wanted to go for a bike ride and she went for a bike ride and she never came back."

Notice how his story lacks details?

Also, another red flag is what he says in the details.  Didn't he tell us the last day he saw her was the day before she went missing?  Then how could she tell him she wanted to go for a bike ride on the day she went missing if he didn't see her?  Is he leaving out details here?  Did she tell this to someone else or to him? If she told him, he just leaked some critical information.

By the way Mike tells us about the night before she went missing and says there were no problems leads to believe there WERE problems.  His denial is quite intense.  It occupies his mind.  If there was nothing to be thinking about, he would never have mentioned it.

I believe Mike knows more than he is sharing, unfortunately.

Thanks for the post suggestion!

 Urbach–Wiethe disease: Feel No Fear
  by Eyes at 8:50 AM

Portrait of a man

You all imagine living in a world where one can spot lies, but have you ever thought about living in a world without fear?  That's the world that  a 44-year old woman who scientists are studying lives in.  She has a rare condition called Urbach–Wiethe disease in which scientists believe has destroyed her amygdala, the brain structure that is responsible for storing emotional memories.

Researchers have tried to scare this woman without success and even more interesting is that she cannot register the emotion of fear in other people.  She has unfortunately paid for that as she has been held up by knife point, accosted twice and nearly killed in a domestic violence.

While it may sound good for those of us who do feel fear, it definitely has consequences to not feel fear.

You can read more here!

 School Board Gunman had "Grimace"
  by Eyes at 9:50 AM

A man whose wife was fired by a school board in Panama City, Florida, came to a school board meeting wielding a gun Tuesday, spray painted a circle with a "V" on the wall, and ordered the women out of the room as he pointed a gun at the men on the board.

Bay City Schools Superintendent Bill Husfelt said, ""He had that look in his eyes. I've seen anger before, and he almost had like a grimace, a smile. He had planned to do this and we knew it wasn't going to end well."

Husfelt, in a tragic time, quickly put together the inconsistencies in perpetrator Clay Duke's behavior.  He also knew to take Duke seriously and trust him when Duke said he was going to die that day.   He trusted what was likely gut responses because in these split seconds he didn't have time to think things through.  In hindsight, I suspect he remembered the clues.

I have to wonder if that grimace was an expression of contempt.

Bill Husfelt talks about this incident and recalls it.  He displays a classic expression of sadness in his eyebrows that is painful to watch.  You can see by simply looking at Husfelt's face he is very sad about what happened.

Duke left a message behind on his Facebook page. He wrote,  "Some people will say I was an evil monster...no...I was just born poor in a country where the wealthy manipulate."

What a tragedy.

 Kiesha Abrahams' Mom Speaks Out
  by Eyes at 8:05 AM

Kristi Abraham, whose 6-year old daughter went missing in July in Sydney, Australia, shows her anger when she talks about people who are using her missing daughter's name for a flea market every Saturday. They have raised over $300 Australian dollars by charging people who sell things a few dollars to participate. The people who raised the money say they plan on having a jumping castle in honor of Kiesha at Christmas. Kristi is clearly not happy.

People often shake their head for a variety of reasons.  Some times people shake their head in disbelief.  Sometimes they shake their head in amazement, like when they'd say "I can't believe how big that wave was." Other times they shake their head  to mean no.  Just because someone shakes their head left to right (or vice versa) when they say something that is affirmative, doesn't mean it is a sign of deception or they don't believe what they are saying.

Head shakes are quite tricky business if you don't have a deep understanding of human nature, and I caution people not to use head shakes as hot spots or clues unless you understand the nuances.

As with all clues to deception, for every clue you tell me that indicates a lie, I can find an honest person who does the same thing.

For beginners, when you are looking for this clue in deception, you want to look for a change between an unconscious action to a conscious correction for it to be a solid clue.

With Kaine Horman, his head shake in this video (which I cannot get to load this morning), does not flag me as inconsistent in any fashion.

The Clues to Martin MacNeill's 911 Call
  by Eyes at 8:22 AM

Interiors of a bathroom

I've highlighted the clues I see in the 911 transcript below.

Police are currently investigating the death of Michele MacNeill who died in her bathtub in 2007 a week after she had plastic surgery.  She was married to a doctor who supposedly found her unconscious in the tub.  Michele's death was originally considered death by natural causes by the medical examiner, but investigators are taking another look.

Here is his 911 call.  What do you see when you read it?  You can hear the 911 call here. I can't believe this is real...

911 Call Transcript

911 OPERATOR: Pleasant Grove Police Department.

MACNEILL: I need -- I need an ambulance!

911 OPERATOR: OK, what`s the problem, sir? We need medical. Sir, what`s wrong?

MACNEILL: My wife`s fallen in the bathtub!
If your wife is unconscious, face down in the tub, wouldn't getting her out immediately be the first thing anyone would do?

911 OPERATOR: Who`s in the bathtub? Who`s in the bathtub?

MACNEILL: My wife!

911 OPERATOR: OK, is she conscious?

MACNEILL: She`s not. I`m a physician. I need help! (INAUDIBLE)
Who is better to help than a trained physician?  Am I missing something?  I would expect to hear him give a run down of the basic life support he had tried to do and what the status was so the EMT could be prepared.  He does none of this.

911 OPERATOR: Sir, sir, I need you to calm down. Sir, I can`t understand you, OK? Can you calm down just a little bit?

MACNEILL: I need help!

911 OPERATOR: OK, what -- your wife is unconscious?

MACNEILL: She is unconscious. She`s under water.

She's under the water?  Why isn't this physician taking his wife out of the water BEFORE he called 911?  It makes no sense.  Most people respond naturally to circumstances like this.  This man isn't.  Doctors deal with trauma all the time and  are typically able to think under pressure, too, yet this man can't?

911 OPERATOR: OK, did you get her out of the water?

MACNEILL: I can`t! I just (INAUDIBLE) I let the water out (INAUDIBLE)
Why on earth couldn't he get his wife out of the water?

911 OPERATOR: She`s under the water?

MACNEILL: She`s under the water, and I need an ambulance!
What is his excuse for not getting her out?

911 OPERATOR: OK, is she breathing at all?

MACNEILL: She`s not!

911 OPERATOR: OK, sir, the ambulance has been paged. They`re on their way, OK? Do not hang up.

MACNEILL: Why?
Why on earth would he ask why??

911 OPERATOR: What? Sir?

MACNEILL: Hello?

911 OPERATOR: Sir, this is 911. Can I help you?

MACNEILL: I need help!

911 OPERATOR: OK, sir, they`re on their way. Is your wife breathing?

MACNEILL: She is not! I am a physician. I`ve got CPR in progress! (INAUDIBLE)
How can he have CPR in progress if she is under water?  Hello!

911 OPERATOR: You`re doing CPR?

(CROSSTALK)

911 OPERATOR: Sir, how old is your wife?

MACNEILL: My wife is 50 years old. She just had surgery a couple of days, a week ago.

911 OPERATOR: What kind of surgery did she have?

MACNEILL: She had a facelift.

911 OPERATOR: She had a facelift?

MACNEILL: Yes.

911 OPERATOR: OK, do you know how to do CPR?

MACNEILL: I`m doing it!
How can he be doing this if she is underwater?  We didn't hear him get her out at any point.  Even if he did, he should be winded if he is doing this...on a speaker phone.  I wonder if anyone checked if he was on a speaker phone.

911 OPERATOR: OK, do not hang...

When you listen to the 911 call, you hear this husband is mad.  That raises my eyebrows.  I'd like to ask him what he is mad about.

This phone call would be enough for me to say "suspicious" without any doubt.

Tonya Craft Reunites with Ex-husband and Gets Joint Custody
  by Eyes at 9:03 AM

I am so happy that Tonya Craft has regained joint custody of her children.  She so deserves it.  She was accused of molesting three children in Georgia, and the courtroom where the case was tried earlier this year was sharply divided.  Many people believed that kids don't lie, but they can absolutely be persuaded to believe things or believe things are true if they hear them enough--especially if they are said by influential adults.  While I didn't see the children speak, I did see Tonya tell her side of the story.  When I saw Tonya talk about the accusations before trial, I believed in her innocence, and thankfully a court found Tonya Craft not guilty.

It was must be very gratifying for Tonya to have her ex-husband, who original thought she molested their daughter, sit beside her  and speak out in support of her now.  It should give all the doubters that Tonya was dishonest some serious second thoughts!!

Thanks, Karon, for the link.

 Susan Powell: One Year Later
  by Eyes at 9:07 AM

Susan Powell disappeared a year ago from her Utah home that she shared with her two young sons and husband Josh Powell.  Josh Powell told people last year that he took his young boys camping in sub-freezing temperatures at 12:30 a.m. during a snow storm, and when he returned, his wife was missing.  He didn't report to work on Monday and said he got his days confused.

His story raises many people's eyebrows.  Worse, Josh did not search for his wife.  Instead he moved out of the family home, left the state and went to live with his family.

Josh's behavior was and still is loaded with red flags.

Do I believe Josh's father's hypothesis that Susan ran off with another guy-- who also disappeared about the same time?  I absolutely do not.  It's absurd.  To me, it was a cleverly crafted story to deflect from the person of interest in this case -- Josh Powell. I think most people will see this.

By looking at Susan in her photos, you can see her bubbly personality.  It supports what her mom says when she tells us Susan was a social person and that she made friends easily.  When we look at Josh, however, I suspect he was more introverted than Susan, and had a lot more trouble making friends. Of the two, I would bet money, he was the child who had a troubled childhood. I wish the media would look into this more and do some reporting on it.    It would be illuminating.

Look at the sadness expressed in Josh's face in the still photo the Today Show shows of him in the video at the 6:00 minute marker.

I saw this interesting article in the Salt Lake Tribune:  Feds Want Susan's Journals.  What is interesting is their quote from Steve Powell, Josh's father.  I think it is very telling.  From the Salt Lake Tribune, "Steve Powell said: 'They asked for a copy and we have worked diligently to quickly create a complete copy. We have let them know their copy is ready, and are waiting to hear back.'

Why would he have to work at getting a copy??  Does that make sense to anyone?  It sure makes you wonder about the authenticity of these journals, doesn't it?

You can read my original thoughts of Josh Powell here.

Thanks, Karon, for the story!

Little Zahra Baker's story is the stuff of nightmares. A sweet little girl gets sick with cancer, she loses her leg to the disease and has to wear a prosthetic. Neighbors talk of seeing Zahra abused by her stepmom, and then one day Zahra disappears. Her biological mom is in another country unable to locate her daughter.

News reports surface that the little girl could have been put through a wood chipper. Now drains are being searched for evidence. While the little girl's DNA has been found and her death ruled a homicide, the facts of this case are still not in. We've heard there may be two more suspects in the murder of litle Zahra--one of which was a friend of Zahra's stepmom. The nightmares don't stop and now to hear that there was no family at her visitation, it's just overwhelmingly sad. Where on earth was her father, Adam Baker? You just can't imagine such horrors go on...but the realization is that they do.

Next time you see a child who looks like they need help, think of Zahra.  If only someone would have become her advocate and fought her, maybe this wouldn't have happened.

 Clint Horvatt Sentenced to Life
  by Eyes at 9:40 AM

Clint Horvatt, who enlisted the help of another man to kill his fiancee, and then claimed he was ambushed on the side of the road by a stranger in December of 2008 was found guilty in November.  He was sentenced to life. It only took the jurors an hour to come to their decision.

Horvatt's fiancee, Summer Smith, was 36 when she was killed.  She left behind a little boy.

For those of you who followed the case, I thought you'd like an update.  Many thanks to Val for sending this and keeping me updated!
______________
I somehow thought Clint confessed to this crime.  Does anyone remember that? I can't seem to find that though.

 Amanda Knox Appeal Underway
  by Eyes at 9:14 AM

Amanda Knox's appeal for freedom started in an Italian court last week. Knox and her boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, were convicted in the murder of Meredith Kercher, an English student studying abroad in Italty.  Knox and Kercher were roommates.  Knox's sentence was 26 years and Sollecito's sentence was 25.  Both hope their appeals will bring freedom.

I've always felt Amanda knew more than she was telling, but that is all I know.  I don't know that she was directly involved in the death of Meredith Kercher. She has spoken very little to the public on this case.

Amanda's appeal is set to get underway on December 11.   Interestingly, if you notice Raffaele and Amanda seem to be sporting the same hair style.  Is this just coincidence?  Or is there more to this?  I find it rather freakish, whether it is coincidence or not!  If I was Amanda, I would have been mortified.

PERUGIA, ITALY - NOVEMBER 24: Amanda Knox arrives in Perugia's court of Appeal during the first session of her appeal against her murder conviction on November 24, 2010 in Perugia, Italy. American Amanda Knox and her Italian ex-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito were convicted of the murder of Ms Knox's former British flatmate Meredith Kercher in 2007. Their trial took place in December 2009 with Knox and Sollecito receiving sentences of 26 and 25 years respectively. Rudy Guede, an unemployed man from Ivory Coast, was also convicted of the Meredith Kercher's murder. The case is also forming the basis for a film currently being shot in Italy entitled 'The Amanda Knox Story', with American actress Hayden Panettiere cast as Amanda Knox. True Justice.org has an interesting photo of Amanda Knox in court during the murder trial where it appears she is flirting with Raffaele Sollecito. It's eerie. Check it out here

Thanks, Sally, for the photo link.
