 Fun Experiment
  by Eyes at 11:49 AM

I had a thought about 4:00 in the morning. It seems to be a productive thinking hour for me. I wake up and have good thoughts!

I remembered last night in my sleep that I had two people vote that they read my blog from the South Pole. I started thinking about all the cool places my readers come from and I thought it would be really cool if you guys would want to show me!

If you are willing, this is what I thought would be interesting. Print off the first page of my blog or the flyer here, take it with you and find a cool place in your city or location -- perhaps something notable -- like a landmark that people would recognize, take a picture showing my blog page or flyer and YOU, and sent it to me!

I will then gather all the photos and put them on a page. It would be helpful if you tell me where you are! If you don't want your face shown, I can blur it out for you, or you can do it if you prefer! Or you can show just your arms or whatever you are comfortable with -- keep it rated "G" please. My email is on the left side of the page.

I think this could be pretty cool because you, my readers, come from around the globe! I hope we get people from each continent.

Something like this (but the piece held up would be my blog or flyer):

Jumping International CSI 5* Event

I realized the webpage doesn't print very well, so I created a flyer. Click here to download flyer. It's in .PDF format!

 48 Hours: West Memphis Three
  by Eyes at 10:54 AM

So many people have asked me to review this case, and as you all know, I haven't because the video footage that I have been given didn't allow me to determine when it was shot, pre- or post conviction, which is essential for me. I am hoping this Saturday night when this airs, that I will get clear footage so I can share my opinion! Don't forget to set up your DVRs!

 Tiger Woods: My Thoughts
  by Eyes at 8:00 PM

Tiger Woods delivers remarks to the news media.

Tiger Woods held a news conference this week to apologize to the public for cheating on his wife. The apology wasn't to his wife, it was to his fans and all the other people he let down publicly by his actions. In essence, his apology was to you and me. Do you believe Tiger was sincere? That's the golden question.

Immediately after watching Tiger say "all the right things", I speculated that the public would be deeply divided on their opinions. Tiger, when you watched him, no doubt, had a speech coach and in my opinion, that coach failed him miserably. He told Tiger to pause in places that were unnatural for him, and he tried to get Tiger to emphasize things in ways that he wouldn't do himself. These behaviors, I believe, skewed a lot of people's beliefs negatively. Many people saw him as phony, I suspect without understanding the reasoning as to why.

Read moreBody language is very complex and if we modify what is normal for someone and aren't careful, those who are less discerning will confuse the message. Tiger's apology would have been a greater success, if he followed his heart instead of his coach, if you want my opinion.

Many people balked at Tiger for reading his apology. I place no judgment on Tiger for this element of his speech. When you are nervous and humiliated for what you have done, facing people and owning up to it, rattles the best of us. And if you have a lot of things to say, as Woods did here, it is easy to forget things.

With all of that being said, I believed Tiger's apology was sincere. His facial expressions, tone of voice and all the other elements that he can't consciously control were supportive. There was no underlying or leaking arrogance or cockiness that he was trying to hid, which would be hot spots. How many other athletes can you say that about when they have apologized about indiscretions? I can't think of any offhand.

It was clear that Tiger was not his usual rock-solid self, except at times that he felt justified, which was scolding the media for ridiculing his wife and family.

In the first second of Tiger's interview, before he even speaks, Tiger shows a brief subtle expression of fear. He is obviously scared to face the public. This expression caught me by surprise. Tiger has always been as solid as a rock in front of the camera, but this time it is was different. And it wasn't his last expression of fear either. Tiger continued to flash this expression during his interview. If Tiger's apology was all rhetoric, I don't think he would have felt fear. He would have felt indignant, but he did not. I don't see any hints of indignation whatsoever, which is highly notable.

There were moments where he clearly showed humility, which is hard to fake. Other times, Tiger lowered his eyebrows as he spoke which some might confuse with anger, but this expression was actually indicative of sincerity. It's like an added emphasis to what he was saying. Insincere people do not do this.

When Tiger says, "I am deeply sorry for my irresponsible and selfish behavior I engaged in," he expresses anguish.

If you listen closely, at certain points, you can hear Tiger's voice give out, ever-so-slightly, from time-to-time. This is a sign of his emotional state. He is truly feeling these emotions.

There is also a heaviness in Tiger's eyes and a slowness in his blinking and facial expressions that you can't coach. Compare it to other interviews of Tiger to see for yourself.

If we apply logic to Tiger's indiscretions and ask why did this happen, I don't think it takes a rocket scientist to understand it, and I was really happy to hear Tiger say it. What he said was not easy to say. I've actually never heard another athlete be so honest before.

Tiger said:
I stopped living by the core values that I was taught to believe in. I knew my actions were wrong, but I convinced myself that normal rules didn't apply. I never thought about who I was hurting. Instead, I thought only about myself. I ran straight through the boundaries that a married couple should live by. I thought I could get away with whatever I wanted to. I felt that I had worked hard my entire life and deserved to enjoy all the temptations around me. I felt I was entitled. Thanks to money and fame, I didn't have to go far to find them.
This statement is clearly taking full ownership for his actions. There is no other explanation that is as sincere as this. If Tiger was just going through the motions, and not completely accepting his downfall, I don't think he would have said this. It would have been too close to home.

Compare Tiger's behavior to Australian Matthew Johns as he talks about his indiscretions. The two interviews are distinctly different. Johns leaks a lot of telltale signs that he isn't half as sorry as he says he is...

 Diena Thompson's Parents
  by Eyes at 9:53 AM

Diena's parents spoke out to the media briefly (in this undated video). A reader has written to make asking if they are genuinely sad, because they do not see any tears.

Diena's parents are absolutely in deep pain and truly sad here. Her father is truly overwhelmed and keeps covering his face to try to keep his composure so he doesn't break down. Notice how his eyes look puffy, too, from tears or lack of sleep? He also shows hints of anger as well. Watch his eyebrows as he speak and his fist. You just get the feeling he wants to scream, "Why us? Why Somer?!" He is in shock, if you want my opinion. I think if you would have talked to him at this point, he would have told you he felt like he was in a surreal world--having trouble accepting what has happened and where he has found himself.

Diena's mother's voice cracks, too, when she talks and her voice gives out on her from her emotions as well-- all supportive of sincerity. I suspect these two, at this point, were dry from lots of crying.

Genuine sadness tugs at your heartstrings, doesn't it?

 The Future of Animated Acting
  by Eyes at 9:51 AM

Australians In Film Screening Of "Avatar"

A reader sent me this video this morning of the making of Avatar. It talks about how technology has changed animated acting, and how an animated actor's facial expressions will be much more genuine than before. I thought you might enjoy this!

I have to say for me, if the actor isn't good to begin with, it still won't make much of a difference. Regular actors, for the most part, in general don't capture my attention because they often miss the mark. Dang! I was hoping for some miracle :)

Thanks, Christoph.

Vinyl Ready Art - Road Signs

Things have been getting heated in the comment sections lately, and I want to stress my comment rules. It is important that people feel safe sharing their opinions and lately, I do not feel this is happening.

If you want to post an opinion on Eyes for Lies, I have a few requirements. First and foremost, keep it civilized, respectful and do not use any vulgar language. Second, I will NOT tolerate personal attacks. While I absolutely welcome dissenting opinions, and encourage them, if they are not respectful towards others, I will delete them and ban the offending poster without hesitation. There are a few commenters out there who are pushing my acceptability limits.

I also do not support discussions about religion and politics (arguing sides) as people are emotional about these topics and when people are emotional, tempers flare, and the truth, at that point, has little importance. Please avoid topics that are not directly related to the content that are highly debated.

Last, you, as readers, also have the power of veto. If a poster says something you think is inflaming, or disrespectful, you have the power to remove their comment. Just click on the "Flag" option below the post. When you do this, no one will see it but me. Three flags and the post will automatically be deleted by the JS-Kit software.

 Alex Martin is Nick Francisco
  by Eyes at 8:58 AM

A Seattle reporter tracked down missing Nick Francisco in Southern California recently, and did a fascinating interview with him. Watch the interview here.

Nick, who now goes by the new name of Alex Martin, however, doesn't say much about the details of what happened. He doesn't even mention Christine's name once. The reporter has to poke and prod at him to get him to speak the few words he does say.

Nick is clearly upset and despondent, and could even be suicidal, or worse. He portrays a sadness that is hard to explain, and a hopelessness that causes me fear. I think I feel fear because Nick feels like a victim in every aspect of his life that he talks about here. When people feel their life is out of control, and that they are a victim at every turn, their potential to cause others harm grows exponentially. Nick works to stop himself from breaking down. He is extremely detached and is trying to detach more and more, yet he is in a lot of pain. I hope Nick finds help and soon.

Read moreThe reporter asks Nick about making the final decision to disappear in 2008, and Nick says, "Well, it was either doing that, or waking up the next morning with a gun to my mouth. I had one in the shed. It's pretty cold when you put it in your mouth every day."

What strikes me so much about this statement by Nick (aka Alex) is how Christine, his wife, portrayed something entirely different (source):
"My husband is missing and he would come home if he could," Christine Francisco told FOX News [days after his disappearance].

Christine, who is pregnant with the couple’s third child, said her husband would never leave the family and believes he was the victim of foul play.

"He would not run out on his family ever," she said.

In Christine's interview with Greta van Susteren in the days after her husband disappeared, Greta asked Christine, "Did you get the sense that anything unusual was going on in his life?" Christine's response as she holds back laughter, "Not at all. He sounded so excited to come home, and he was ready to go with the cookies."

If you live with a man, and are married to him for seven years, and he is suicidal, don't you think you'd know? Of if you didn't, once he disappeared, don't you think you'd look back and at least say that he wasn't happy? How come Christine portrays something dramatically different? When I look back on my first review of Christine, suddenly her laughter make sense. I suspect she knew what she was saying was ridiculous.

I also found it so strange that Christine Francisco didn't reveal any details about Nick when she said he was found safe and alive, either. I mean what sane woman, who was violated as she says she was, would protect a deadbeat dad, and not reveal what she found, where he was and what his new name was. Most mom's would want to hold their husband accountable--especially if people called her suspicious!! Why on earth did she continue to protect him?

Now in this article about this case, KIRO7.com says: "...the state [of Washington] says its hands are tied. For reasons of confidentiality, they cannot talk about this case in particular."

What the heck? Why this "confidentiality?" What is being kept behind closed doors? If this was just a simply runaway case, there would be no reason for confidentiality. Something is going on that we are not privy to, and for a reason. I have my suspicions, but I will not publicly discuss them, because they are speculative.

We still don't know what the truth is, and we may never find out the truth, but for the first time, things are making a little bit more sense.

It's a sad story from every angle...

 LA Times: Edwards Engaged
  by Eyes at 9:44 AM

According to the Los Angeles Times, John Edwards is engaged to Rielle Hunter. I am a bit surprised to see they say their source is the National Enquirer, so take it for what you will...

It sure seems like a "spiteful move," if this is true for John Edwards. His wife kicks him out and then Rielle gets the offer? Or, if Rielle got the offer just before Young's book was released, you sure do wonder if Edwards did it to appease Hunter from speaking out against him, don't you? How insulting is that for Rielle! Any woman who doesn't see through that doesn't have a bright future.

I'd kick him to the curb for a proposal like that!

 Jarred Harrell stands behind Diena??
  by Eyes at 10:19 PM

Jarred Harrell
Karon Cox, a reader here at Eyes for Lies, made an incredible discovery. She appears to have identified a man that has an amazing resemblance to Jarred Harrell, the man named a person of interest in the Somer Thompson case today.

Look at this video below. At time marker 2:08 and 3:36, do you see the man in the white T-shirt? Does he look like Jarred Harrell? If so, I wonder what his connection is to Diena. This man appears he is there giving Diena support. The pieces of this puzzle may be coming together. Amazing eye, Karon. Wow! We should find out soon enough, if this is the case.

If this is Jarred Harrell, these words of Diena's are haunting:
"I've thought, 'Please don't let it be one of these people that's come around and hugged me and said how sorry they were.' I've thought, 'I wonder -- when we were doing the candlelight vigils if -- if he was out there."
See update here.

An arrest warrant accuses Harrell of downloading pornographic images and movies of girls as young as 6 on a computer and numerous discs, which roommates found in an aparment he once lived in on Wells Road and turned over to police. Harrell was kicked out of that apartment after being accused of stealing an IPOD touch of a roommate.

Beseler said Harrell also lived in a home at 1152 Gano Ave., which was searched today as part of a series of search warrants served in the case. The home is along a path that Somer, 7, disappared on Oct. 19 while on her way home from school. Beseler did not say if Harrell had moved into the home after leaving his Wells Road apartment

 Charles Erickson's Deposition
  by Eyes at 1:34 PM

Video Link Removed

Above is the deposition taken by Kathleen Zellner from Charles Erickson (he says he does not go by the name "Chuck") in November of last year. I have to tell you, I don't get much from this deposition, because Erickson is just reading a statement, and not talking about things as they come to his mind naturally. That's a real bummer.

Read moreHowever, what Erickson says still causes me concern. He wants us to believe he remembers some things for sure, but other things he just doesn't know. Either he remembers or he doesn't. The fact that he says he didn't remember for two years until after a dream still hangs in my mind. I'd have to see more to form an opinion.

I think at this point, investigators or attorneys need to go back and see if anything Erickson is saying now really points to him knowing the truth. Does he know things that only the killer would know? If he is just repeating the same things as he did before, that was littered with loopholes, we know this is just another crazy dream and Erickson is unreliable like he was the first time. But since Erickson is saying he is a liar, that should absolutely be considered in the case against Ryan Ferguson.

One last note, I can't believe they are allowed to broadcast his social security number. We needs laws on this stuff!

Thanks, Julie, for the link.

 Voices and Emotions
  by Eyes at 9:40 AM

Here is a phone call of a man, sadly, just before his death. I will tell you it is haunting to listen to, so if you are sensitive, you might want to avoid it. But what is fascinating is the tone of voice of the caller. At first, he sounds amazingly calm considering the situation. The way he says, "Our accelerator is stuck" really strikes me. If I only heard that part of the call, I'd have no idea this guy had any fear. I don't think he believed he was going to die at first. He was still hopeful they would get help. But at the very end, when he sees what is ahead of him, in the last seconds, he realizes it. It's chilling and such a tragedy. In a way, I wish I didn't listen to it because it is haunting, but I feel it is valuable to hear how real people respond in real tragedies, so we don't falsely judge someone, say in a 911 call, in a story with a different outcome. Thanks, Rob, for the video link.

Read moreI drove a Honda that had the accelerator stick. It was an electronic failure, if you want my opinion. My parents scraped the car after it happened. I was backing out of my parents driveway, with them watching and waving goodbye. I was borrowing their car.

I put the car in reverse, never touched the gas pedal because I was on a hill, but the car accelerated and the engine roared. I panicked, naturally, as I was going backwards down a driveway and had to turn into a road where cars flew around a bend at 30 mph. Thankfully, no one was on the road or I might not be here today.

My mom tells the story that my eyes got wide as golf balls and she knew instantly I was in trouble, bu there was nothing they could do but watch in horror.

I tried the brakes. Nothing.

I reached for the emergency brake and pulled like hell. It did nothing! No hope!

I realized in that instant, I couldn't go backwards down a winding residential street. I would die quickly. I was prepared to hit an object. I chose my neighbor's house, before I got going too fast. I would speculate I was close to 25 mph at that time. But by sheer luck, before I did that, as I looked down heading backwards to my neighbor's house wondering what I could do, in a last ditch effort, I saw the keys dangling, and I pulled them. Thank god, I have a brain that works in high stress environments!!

My parents car, with me and two precious creatures in it, came to a stop just inches away from our neighbors house.

I was terrified. It took me weeks to get over, though I did drive again right away. Today I don't know that I would be able to do that.

My parents never drove that car again. They had it towed away with a big warning sign in the window: dangerous to drive. It had an engine that revved frequently while in neutral (common for Hondas of that era), and it had once before accelerated on me, but came back under control within seconds, with no explanation. I wrote it off as strange, told my family, but we all ignored it. I will never do that again.

This Toyota debacle scares the hell out of me, because I've been there. If you ever find yourself in this position, pull the keys out of the ignition. It saved me from injury and possibly even death.

Here is more about this story in the video above.

 Mechele Linehan: Wins Appeal
  by Eyes at 12:22 PM

Base of column at courthouse

There is more breaking news today. Mechele Linehan's conviction was overturned says CBS's Crimesider. The courts have ruled that two key pieces of evidence presented at trial should have not been allowed. From Crimesider:
The first was a letter, apparently written by Leppink to his parents, that said in the event of his untimely death "Mechele, John or Scott were probably the people or persons that probably killed me. Do me another favor, make sure Mechele goes to jail for a long time."

...The second piece of evidence that the court ruled inappropriate was the testimony of Lora Aspiotis, a former stripper who worked with Linehan at the time of the murder. She testified that Linehan's favorite movie was "The Last Seduction" where a woman convinces another man to kill her husband for $1 million and gets away with it. Aspiotis testified that Linehan said the female protagonist was her hero and she wanted to be just like her.
I shared my thoughts about Mechele Linehan in 2008 after seeing her talk to 48 Hours. Nothing about her behavior supports honesty, if you ask me. I hope the next trial puts her right back where she belongs. I personally believe woman is a danger to society.

By the way, one of Mechele Linehan's fiances posted a comment on my blog. Scott Hilke wrote the following about my thoughts of Mechele (3rd page in comment section), "Having known Mechele Hughes Linehan intimately for a number of years (I'm the "fiance" that isn't dead or in jail for the rest of his life) I would say your observations are spot on."

Thanks, Kirsten, for the update.

 Accomplice: Ryan Ferguson NOT GUILTY
  by Eyes at 9:22 AM

There is a lot of buzz in the news right now about the Ryan Ferguson case. In November, one of the top trial lawyers in the U.S., Kathleen Zellner, took on his case pro bono. She is working on an appeal to get a new trial at the circuit court level. I was very happy to see this as I have always believed in Ryan Ferguson's innocence.

Person with arms handcuffed behind back

New information came out last night as well (Thanks, Stacy) that Chuck Erickson, in a deposition taken last November, changed his story. Erickson wrote to Ferguson for the first time since the trial and asked Ferguson to send his attorneys to speak to him.
Have your lawyers come speak to me the next time that they’re down here. If you tell the media that I asked to see your lawyers, or you tell the media what I talked to your lawyers about before I can talk to my family and/or consult an attorney, it will be regretful. I hope that you are holding up.(source)
Ferguson and his lawyers obviously complied with Erickson's requests and met up with him. They took a deposition.

In the deposition, Erickson says, "I made up what I said about Ryan being on top of the victim." Later he admits, "I lied about him strangling the victim."

ConnectMidMissouri.com continues to report that..
Erickson says he was solely responsible for the robbery and death of Heitholt and says it took so long to come out with this version of the events because he couldn't believe he could have acted so aggressively. He says he was under the influence of drugs and alcohol at the time of the murder.
I have never believed Chuck Erickson from day one, and I have always believed Ryan Ferguson was innocent. It's about time!!!

If anyone sees this deposition uploaded online, please let me know. I want to watch Chuck make his statements to see if I believe this is the truth. I am still skeptical that Erickson isn't giving us the entire truth, personally, though I think it is true that Ryan had nothing to do with this.

 Casey Anthony's Apology: Fake?
  by Eyes at 9:38 AM

A reader requested that I review Casey Anthony's apology to her friend, Amy Huizenga, in the case of check fraud. Anonymous asks on my "Feedback" request page:
http://www.wftv.com/video/22335848/index.html She has super-twitchy microexpressions particularly compared to her blank face a few minutes earlier during her plea form responses http://www.wftv.com/video/22335740/index.html at 1:58 to 3:11 and during the prosecution's descriptions of her crimes at 4:32 to 4:58 (where I swear I see smiling microexpressions while the prosecutor is talking about Casey's purchases at Target.)
Thanks for your request! Here are my thoughts: Read more

When I watch Casey in the second video link, where the judge talks to Casey and asks her questions about her plea deal (at the time marker's specified above), I see no micro expressions. I do not see any positive emotions either. I do, however, see that Casey is swallowing frequently, which is an indication she is likely uncomfortable or nervous.

In the first video link, when I watch Casey as she apologizes to the court (and her friend), I believe that Casey is truly sincere. Her breakdown is genuine and real. It is not fake. I do not see any micro expressions, but what I suspect you are seeing are the normal stress movements of the face as Casey Anthony is trying to hold herself back from crying.

Micro expressions are flashes of hidden emotion that occur in 1/25th of a second. They are fast and fleeting.

What is fascinating to me, and it is very common, is that once people see someone in a negative light, they are unable to accept or see that a person with a negative history can still do genuine and positive things. I suspect this is due to an emotional bias. Emotional biases are a huge blinder to seeing the truth for every one of us. It's one of the biggest pitfalls to being accurate at deception detection...

Thanks, anonymous, for sharing your thoughts with us.

Clarification (2-6-2010): While Casey's crying episode was real and genuine, what we don't know was "what she was crying about". It may have been feelings of sorrow for her friend. It may have been tears for herself, but the emotions were genuine. That's all I can ever say :) I'm not a mind reader :)

Diena Complains about Somer's Lock of Hair
  by Eyes at 9:14 AM

Diena Thompson is just amazing. Her behavior never ceases to amaze me, and it doesn't matter which video you give me of her, something is just strangely off in my eyes.

The reporter says, "What is justice for Somer?"

Diena says almost ready to break out in a laugh, "Finding who did this to her, and them being put to death. That's what I want for them." Look at her shoulder shrugs as she says this. I would expect a definitive response without any doubt, but her shoulders are suggesting she is doubtful about this. Why on earth does this woman feel so good about this? The police haven't even named a suspect! How come she feels so positive? Is this duper's delight on a scale we haven't seen before?

Read moreThe reporter says that Diena believes the killer is local and that he probably talked to Somer at least once before the killing to gain Somer's trust. Isn't that fascinating? That's a change in her core belief . Diena originally told us us that Somer trusted everyone. In November, on MSNBC, Diena said, "She just loved everyone. She was very trusting. She just trusted everyone and she just assumed that they wouldn’t hurt her (source)." How come Diena's core belief changed?

Three things about this statement stand out to me. She is now describing Somer's core personality different as mentioned above. Number two, if she believes the killer is local, doesn't she fear she is taunting him by saying he deserves the death penalty? Doesn't she fear that he might kill her and go after her or her remaining children?

Why isn't Diena living in fear? Is she demanding protection from law enforcement? Is she still living in the same house?
Why does this woman feel no fear?? It defies logic. Third, when she talks about the killer looking her in her eyes, there is a vacancy that I see in her eyes that I can't explain, but stands out to me. There is no tension, perhaps, no real vision in her mind's eye of the actual scenario she talks about, which we would expect to see, if she truly had conviction for what she is saying.

Watch Diena's response when she says she feels the police are getting close to a suspect. It's strange. I've never seen another victim act like she does. She has hope when she should have none. The police won't even clue her into the investigation and she just "feels it" that they are close to solving this? In my eyes, it's insane.

Diena says, "I've met some incredible people through all of this, and they will call me with bible verses, and I'll read them and just be...completely...(shoulder shrug)...in awe." When Diena says this, she is giving away indications that she is thinking as she speaks, not talking from the heart. When she shrugs her shoulders above, I suspect she doesn't know what to say after "completely". Then she comes up with the rest of her babble. She continues, "...that...it's almost like...it was written...for me (another shoulder shrug)." The pauses are notable here. I don't believe a word she is saying, frankly.

Notice her attorney isn't present? Has he suggest to Diena to stay out of the spotlight, but Diena refuses to listen?

Listen to her complain about the lock of Somer's hair! I about fell off my chair!!! Diena smiles as she talks about what should be one of the most painful things in her life. There isn't a tear, an ounce of any sad emotion whatsoever when Diena says, "Well...the lock of hair ...wasn't what I was expecting. It's...not that much, and...it looks dirty to me (smirking)." Notice the...hesitation...in...her...speech...as...she...talks...about...this. It's strange and notable. It is highly indicative she is just thinking as she talks, instead of speaking from the heart.

More than that, most mothers who have lost a child take everything they left from their child and idolize it. To most mothers, a lock of hair would be more precious than gold, even if it was dirty. They usually can't part with anything and often revere every little thing and treat it as if it were as precious as the child was. I've never seen a mother in mourning complain something wasn't good enough or right that is a part of their child. It defies logic. How many mothers whose children were killed have you seen leave their child's room exactly as it was for years, if not decades? Yet FirstCoastNews.com reported, "The grief has been so intense she [Diena] wanted to get rid of Somer's things, but she was advised not to, so she packed them away for now."

Diena Thompson completely defies everything that I know is normal. I think she either knows boatloads more about this case than she is telling us, or perhaps she has a mental illness? Her behaviors are off the charts, like nothing I have ever seen before...

Thanks, Kat2, fort the links and suggestion.

 My Thoughts on Andrew Young
  by Eyes at 9:26 AM

When I watched Andrew Young on ABC's 20/20 on Friday night, I was disgusted and that is not a word I use often. What Andrew said about Edwards painted a picture of a monster. But the more I watched Andrew talk, and I watched him smirk and grin, that monster became Andrew Young. That's not to say that I have any positive regard for what Edward did. I think it is despicable.

Andrew wants us to believe that he was a victim here. He wants to think he was forced to keep a secret and that he had no other choice. Young's wife, Cheri, even says that she didn't want to hurt Elizabeth in her dying days as her excuse to go forward with the lies, yet that doesn't seem to bother her now, does it? We all know that Elizabeth hasn't found a cure.

The Youngs' messages are contradictory, and the reality that one sees when you truly listen to their spoken words, paint them as sick and as twisted as the person they are ratting out, but sadly, they don't seem to think the public will see it. They hope to profit another time from this nightmare. My heart bleeds for Elizabeth and the children in all of this.

Read moreAndrew says early on in the interview, when he talked of first seeing John Edwards, that he fell in love with him. He wanted to work for him, because in his mind, Edwards was going to the top. Young recalls as he got a job with Edwards, "I truly believed that we were going to do great things, and he was my ticket to the top."

The words resonate in my head: "He was my ticket to the top." Who thinks that way unless they want to ride on someone else's coattails, or they want a quick shot at a windfall? Good honest people don't look for others to carry them. They want to work hard on their own merit.

Andrew talks about how John told Elizabeth about his affair with Rielle, "What he told her was that he had had a one night affair, but that I had started having an affair with her after that." When Andrew says this, there is a subtle smile on his face. If he feels guilty and victimized, why does he grin when he says this? Why isn't he mad? Why doesn't he express any anger over these lies?

Andrew goes on and says,"She (Elizabeth) forced me out of their lives and wouldn't let me come into the house." If Andrew wasn't happy and felt stuck, wasn't this his chance to vacate this ugly scenario? Why didn't he? Was the allure of money too great?

Side cast from their lives, reporter Bob Woodruff says that Andrew writes in his book "The knowledge (of the affair) made me the one friend he would open his heart to, and the one person besides Rielle who could hurt him the most."

Who do you know that thinks in terms of hurting friends, unless they are someone sinister and only out for their own good?

Is this when Young hatched his plan to gather all that he could against Edwards, so he could sell a book and breaking story for big money?? This speaks volumes to me. This identifies a time line and a motive. It appears from this point forward he went along for a free ride, not to do the senator a favor as he claims, but to line his own pockets, doesn't it?

Andrew continues, "He and Rielle told me way more than I wanted to know about everything and anything." Andrew wants us to think he is innocent in all of this, a victim forced to do what Edwards says. Yet listen to him as he tells us he called on other people to help cover Edwards secret: "So I called her (billionaire Bunny Melon), and the senator called her, and she said absolutely. I will send any money you need for this non-campaign expense. She didn't care what it was, as long as it was to help John Edwards."

Clearly, Andrew is a very willing participant. If he just wanted to keep the secret, he certainly didn't have to involve others. He was willing to do anything to get to the top.

During the show, ABC's 20/20 also shows us video of Rielle with the Youngs. When you watch the videos, it is clear the Youngs are enjoying themselves, yet they want to tell us it was not what they wanted to do -- that they felt stuck. After you watch their interactions, do you see any supporting evidence they were unhappy or miserable? Do you see any guilt or shame?

Andrew talks about the times that Edwards came to visit Rielle at his house, "It was disgusting. His wife is dying of cancer four or five miles away from our house and we felt dirty, and rightfully so, we did wrong."

I'm sure he felt dirty. What example was he giving his children? Who wouldn't feel guilty about that, but obviously this guilt hasn't stopped him from making an even bigger spectacle by publishing the tell-all details in a book. This man has no shame whatsoever. His actions don't match his words, and his words aren't cohesive. What does that spell to you?

Andrew then says he was taken off the campaign payroll, and given another job through an Edwards' connection. He got a 30% raise he says, but "had no real responsibilities other than the obvious that I was supposed to be the go between...the controller of Rielle." When you have no job responsibilities and you get a 30% raise, it is clear you will do anything for money, isn't it? This guy shows us time and time again, he has no morals.

Edwards called Andrew another time, and Andrew says, "He wanted me to make a statement claiming paternity of Rielle's child. All I could think of (grin) was 'oh my god' how am I going to tell Cheri this."

I think that statement is the truth. Notice, he wasn't at all concerned about lying. He was more concerned about convincing his wife to let him do it! I think Cheri was upset, angry and not interested, until she saw the potential of financial rewards. Then she happily and willingly joined in. Trips to Aspen, living in a mansion, five star hotels, $23,000 for two weeks, a chef, a masseuse: What's not to love?

Watch Andrew say with a big grin, "We didn't know what we were getting ourselves into" (part 3, time marker 8:10). Is anyone buy this? He goes on to ramble nonsense, "But I would like, in our small defense...to make the point that John Edwards was one of the most charismatic, persuasive people there were, and was a viable candidate for the leader of the free world."

Andrew thinks we are gullible enough to believe he was persuaded into doing this--that he didn't have a backbone. Do you know how much guts it takes to claim paternity of someone else's child, knowing that if it comes out it will be a huge scandal? Andrew is no mousy, tail-whipped dog. If Young was honest, he'd confess he was greedy and would do anything to get his money however he had to.

Listen to Andrew's wife, Cheri, when she says on video while they are on the lam with Rielle, "Christmas in Aspen!!!" She sounds really distraught and sad, doesn't she? Listen to her a few minutes later when she says, "Let me zoom in on that belly!!" as she pans the camera into a close-up of Rielle Hunter's very pregnant stomach. It sure sounds like that belly was their "cash cow", doesn't it? There doesn't seem to be any tension at all. If they felt so wrong, why doesn't it show? I think it feels wrong now only because they couldn't sell their book any other way!

Even if Edwards didn't become president, I suspect Andrew figured if Edwards got into the White House in another high paying and powerful position, that he could use all of this "info" he was collecting against Edwards to land a juicy job there. And when all else failed , he could always write a book. It wasn't that he didn't have any other options. It was his only option to get rich quick in his eyes!

Bob Woodruff says, "Why didn't you say, 'this is enough? This is too much, I'm out of here.'" Andrew replies, "We were going to setup a foundation, where I would be the executive director..." Woodruff says that foundation would have secured Young's future. If Young truly wanted to start a foundation, why isn't he using the proceeds of this book? Why isn't he doing the right thing now and donating these proceeds?

Cheri says when watching Edwards in a taped interview, "I was completely disgusted. The lies, his facial expressions. He was lying about everything in that interview..." I believe Cheri means what she says here, yet isn't it ironic how she can completely remove herself from the liars? What does she think she was doing in all of this? Does she discount her affect on the Elizabeth Edwards and her children?

I wish we could see more of Andrew talking about the sex tape he claims to have found. He is only seen saying, "There is one tape that was marked special." Cheri, however, says, "It was cut and pulled down, I mean, pulled out, like we...he really...like real... taped it... back together... (head shake no) and we played it."

Rielle claims Andrew stole the tape from her closet in a hat box, and while they are all untrustworthy to me, I tend to put more credence into Rielle's statement than I do Cheri and Andrew's statement. Rielle had no reason whatsoever to discard this tape as trash. It was equally as powerful in her hands to use against Edwards as it was in Andrew's hands. It makes no sense she would throw it out and more than that, I suspect being in the video business, before she would discard something like this, she knew how to properly destroy it.

Listen to what Andrew says, "To leave it (the tape) in a house for sale, where realtors are going to be coming through it, and leave it there for 8 months, is unbelievable."

I'd sure like to know more details here...What house did Rielle supposedly leave this as trash? I can't find anywhere where Andrew gives us these details. Was it a rental? If it was, and she or they vacated it, how did he get back in 8 months later? Or was it his house that he claims this happened? How does he come up with the time frame of 8 months? Usually when people find trash, they don't know how long it sat there.

I wonder if Rielle made the fateful mistake of trusting the Youngs, like she trusted Edwards, and potentially bragging she had a sex tape to the Youngs and they took advantage of that knowledge, and hence that is how the sex tape got into the hands it did. It certainly wouldn't surprise me.

Bob Woodruff continues, "In your book, you say this (sex tape) is a bargaining chip."

Did Andrew confessed by accident? Watch him backtrack in the interview realizing it doesn't sound good. Andrew says, "I don't know that we thought it was a bargain chip, we finally had something that corroborated what we said and it gave us something." Isn't that called smooth talking? Isn't that the same thing?

Andrew says he told Edward at their last private meeting, "You know, Senator, after you asked me to do this, I'd seen the way you treated a number of other people, and I started saving voice mails, emails, text messages that corroborate my story."

That's just shy of blackmail, isn't it?
Was he waiting for Edwards to change his mind and give him another corrupt job? Why else would he put Edwards on notice? What other reason would he have to do so?

Then Andrew, as Bob Woodruff says, "Upped the anti" by revealing to Edward that he found the sex tape. Hmmm.....

The Youngs tell us they are sorry they lied. Cheri says, "I'm sorry...that we helped...a person that...we found out was not the person that we devoted ourselves too." Does that make any sense? They knew he was a liar when they devoted themselves to him. Did she mean to say that he didn't pay out like they had hoped he would?

Andrew says, "For myself, I am so sorry (smiling) for my part in this. I am so sorry for what I did to my family. This is going to be on my tombstone."

While we know some of what Andrew is saying here is true, because he did corroborate things with evidence, I think this man can look you straight in the face, tell you a bald face lie and never wince, outside of an occasional grin--much like John Edwards. It's people like this who are the most arrogant and smug who scare me the most. They are capable of causing others great harm because they lie without shame, remorse or guilt. Both Edwards and Young have left a wake of destruction behind them to attest to their selfish ways. If you think being selfish is harmless, think again.

Jason Reitman: Up in the Air
  by Eyes at 7:58 PM

62nd Annual Directors Guild Of America Awards - Show

I got a laugh last night. I was watching Oprah and on her show, she aired a segment of the movie "Up in the air" directed by Jason Reitman. Reitman was one of her guests.

During the preview, one of the actors, who supposedly lost his job, was talking to George Clooney, who plays Ryan Bingham in the movie. Bingham (Clooney) fires the man and they show a clip of the man venting his anger at Bingham. I was immediately taken back because the fired man displays a classic anger micro expression.

I was like, "What the heck?! That man was good!" His lip quivered in anger and he showed disgust. I actually sat up and started paying more attention. I woke up a bit! I never see micro expressions in actors. It's unheard of (outside of Lie to Me)!!! Then they played a few more actors and I was like, "Wholly cow! Where did they get these guys? This is good!!"

Then I started wondering if the clips were of real people and they just inserted them in.

After the preview, Oprah disclosed that they weren't actors. They were real people who were laid off. Director Jason Reitman hired them to tell their stories and it gave his movie much more impact.

I loved it!!

Hey, if you are a movie production house and you read this, I'd love to help you make movies more realistic like this! Did you know even if people don't consciously know they perceive micro expressions, their body still responds to them? Check this out!

It was the most refreshing thing. I'm actually thinking of going to see that movie. Maybe you will, too?

* My thoughts on Andrew Young soon, I promise!
